Tire chains

Hey, hoping the locals can help me out with this basic question.  I read through the UDOT advisories for today  and saw snow chains required or advised in some instances.  If the chains are required does that mean i need to have them on my wheels or in my car?  Also, is this applicable to 4wd?  i ask because I will be headed to SLC this fri skiing through tues and would like to be prepared for anything that may prevent me from skiing.

Just from my experience, if you have chains in the vehicle and you tell them you can put them on if you need them, then they are okay with it. I always tell the cops checking at the bottom of Little Cottonwood that I have "Snow tires, traction control, and chains in the vehicle" and they let me go every time. And they do turn people away, I saw some little dinky KIAs and stuff get turned away.

btw I have a 2000 Saturn SL2 w/ racks, snowtires, and traction control like I said above and they are cool with it. It might depend on the cop, and your car, so just always have chains and be prepared to put them on if you need to.

depends on the conditions. check the resorts website to see if lcc or bcc is requiring chains/4by4.

i drove up today in my minivan with all season. no troubles. but if we get even just 2 inches ill be taking the bus.

the 4x4 or chains required means that you need to have them on, technically. But if you have 4 wheel drive you don't need chains you just need one of them.

the cop stopped my trailblazer and asked me if had 4wd.

you need one or the other, chains, or 4wd.

I seen some stupid fuck try and make it up in a hyundai elantra or something. I have no clue how he got by the cops or whatever......but this dumbass actually got stuck trying to go up LCC. He was spinning tires and going backwards. Meanwhile the passengers behind them were probably wiping the feces off from their underwear.

Thanks everyone for the response. My buddy and I are cruising to Utah fri-tues, we were debating between saving a few bucks and renting a 4wd...we're gonna go with the 4wd even though the roads look like they will be clear.

yes, the world is filled with stupid fucks. I was in vermont over new years and saw some assclown in a rear wheel drive mercedes coupe spinning his tires in the inch of snow (plus ice on the road) from the night before as we headed up to stratton. I hope for his safety and everyone else's that he put his car on the side of the road and called a tow truck.

just to clarify for everyone...I called the rental car company and they said you need either chains or 4wd. I made her confirm twice that if i had 4wd i wouldn't be prevented from skiing. I'm gonna double check once I pick the car up this weekend. Thanks again for the info.
