How come snowboarders are so more creative than us?

All kids on NS say the same. "Oh, I wanna see more creative urbans." "I love TC and The Meatheads, they´re so creative and awsome."

So how come (close to) no one does it?
How come we are so far behind snowboarders when it comes to this?
Are we straighter and lamer?
Are we not FREEskiers, with the ability to think outside the box?

I´m sick of urban segments with 95% handrails.

In which way do you mean more creative? Tricks or spots or...?

Personally I think it's easier to jib with a snowboard, but that could also be because I'm way better at snowboarding then I am at skiing...

I think it just seems a lot easier because you see them do it more often and they have more training doing different jibs. Of course there are some advantages, but I don´t think it´s that big a deal.

something i would LOVE to see on skis is a curved wall ride, so common in bmx segments, supper fun to do and look rad. would be hard to find a good spot but would make an awesome shot.

Well I kinda agree, but alot of skiers are throwing down techy stuff like shiftys and tail/nose taps and shit, but I dont think theres any urban creativity like Scott Stevens snowboarding segments, thier rediculous, Watch them on Youtube......i guess its easier to do urban jibs on a snowboard in a way because its kinda like skateboarding, which is all urban inspired.

Yeah, maybe it's the problem skiers throw a lot of technical stuff? Really often you see in snowboard vids quite simple tricks, but on the most random places.
Although I also really enjoy the skate kind of moves on skies. There's this one kid on ns asian_allen I think..? His shit is crazy as hell!

Its a weird paradigm. Snowboarders find new and cleaver shit to jib, then skiers come in a little later and beat it into the ground with technical tricks. Im not saying this applies to every thing but it seems to be a pretty constant trend.

I ride BMX and curved wallrides are sick. they are SOOOO hard to find though. I have always wanted to see a curved wallride on skiis.

well we cant 50-50 alot of stuff which makes creative jibs much more difficult to find and do.  stuff like b-dogs 180 on, sw 50-50 was really something sick.  same with will doing the under swaps.  but i really doubt any snowboarder could 2 onto the handrail wallisch did or 2 onto the rail henrik did in refresh.  its all relative,  urban skiing is still progessing exponentially.  its just what you want to do

I disagree, part of what I think makes freeskiing cooler than snowboarding is our ability to make everything more stylish, try watching any non-proboarder do a spin past a 360, they look like a goddamn flailing fish. at the same time, skiers can make even the simplest of tricks look awesome because they can throw so much more style into the trick.

i totally agree.  i was watching some snowboard films with my homie and the whole time i was blown away by how many creative features they make in snowboard movies, but in most ski movies we just see urban rails and some wallrides

I definitely know what you mean. What I hate is that if you watch a snowboard movie it is mostly sick urban spots. And when there is stuff in say a terrain park, it is like some crazy ass setup made for them with cars and shit. You watch a ski movie and it is 90% park.

To me, skiing is about taking the existing spots and doing every trick you can on them. Snowboarding is about going out and finding new spots and doing something rad. If skiers took a step back and got over thinking that doing as many switch up's as possible was the coolest thing ever then I think we could be in the same spot, creatively, as snowboarding.

I feel you, bro. No one can deny that snowboarding has some "advantages" in freestyle riding. Like Travis Rice and Scotty Stevens pulling the one-foot strapped in shit/boneless shit that they throw down, or the tweaked ass butters or blunt slides that snowboards allow. But, when my friend recommended that I start snowboarding with him, I wanted to make sure that I would choose the snow sport with THE MOST technical potential. When I saw tricks like switch-ups (which, although they're done A LOT, are still steezy), or Russell's "nose-blocks, and all the TC stuff, I said to myself "I'm pretty sure this is WAY more techtastic than ANYTHING snowboarders are doing!". I dunno, I guess I choose to be a skier because I feel like a tech move on skis speaks way louder than a tech move on a snowboard. Skis take more innovation and creativity due to the broken stance and the lower surface area of the bases. And hey, if it gets to be too much of a concern for somebody, there's always mono-skiing?!

Technine is the urban assault crew they throw down crazy shit. personally i think it is way easier to  hit any streetspot snowboarding. there is just some stuff that looks way better snowboarding than skiing on street spots. thats why you dont see that much park footage in vids.

I totally agree with you, i was just thinking this yesterday actually. Lots of ski films are just becoming the same old thing,  lots of basic/ not really creative rails, just alot of technical stuff. Not only do i find alot of the jibs they do are more creatvie but i really find the boarder movies are way better quality with editing and shit and more origional. I find skiing movies are the same old, theres no real reason we have to be behind snowboarders when it comes to this.

Take this trailer for example, im sure its not the most creative boarder movie out there ( i dont  really watch snowboarding vids, i just saw this somewhere) but i really enjoyed it suprisingly, i thought it looked better than some of the ski trailers ive seen recently.

Personally I think watching snowboarders hit hand rails is boring as shit. They all do really simple things like switch hit to 180 out.

But you have to remember that when it comes to rails they can really do twice the amount of things we can, because they can 50-50 and we can't.

Well I agree with you... but when I ski this year, every day I have tried new things. Honestly, I think I have invented some new things on my own which are tons of fun. The people who want to get creative will, and they are. It will take hold soon. My ski season is dedicated to learning creative tricks, not the ones everyone else is doing.

because kids like "progress" which to most means more huge double flips
which kill creativity and shrink the number of riders who get a chance to make a name for themselves in skiing.
That means that the same 20 ppl. are in ALL the movies, and kids end up emulating 2 or 3 guys who have "unique" style that is almost exactly the same as everyone else. But in skiers defense, feeskiing hasn't been around for very long and the majority of ppl who do it are 15 to 17 and since ppl that age are usually afraid to do their own thing, most skiers end up looking like monkeys who dress act and do the same tricks. That pisses off older skiers who do want to do their own thing, but get hated for it on forums on websites like this by ungrateful kids who can't imagine that there might be more than one kind of cool on skis.
Personally, I think skiing has more possibility than snowboarding since our legs aren't stuck to one board, but we'll never get to see that happen if all anyone cares about is the same 4 film/ ski/ apparel companies. Don't ask your friends if what your doing is cool, if you think it is than it is; they'll probably just say it's gay.
And for the love of God, relax with the switchups. so you can do 4 switchups on a flat box, congratulations. One per rail is enough.

i don't think that they are more creative it's that there is more of them. more of them to specialise on one discipline, there are very few skiers which specialise in one discipline, but as there are more snowboarders there's a greater range for specialisation.

so i think it's a numbers game, more of them, more of them to get bored of just rails, bigger budgets.

The nature of snowboarding allows for more creative stunts than skiing does due to the differentiation in design of the snowboard. I don't think it was much tod o with "progression" as it does with the nature of each sport.

Well the switch hit to 180 thing is just an observation from random snowboarding edits I've seen but the 50-50 thing just seems like simple math to me.  Obviously its hugely simplified, because we can do things like 50-50 on one ski and pretzel and such, but I think the fact that it is impossible to 50-50 a rail on skis does definitely limit the amount of tricks we can do.

Your right dude. I personally there are 3 reasons.

First I think that jibbing on a board is comparitively easier on skis (think 50/50s) plus it's a different peice of equipment and your strapped in different so it will breed its own unique tricks. That being said there is alot of room for creativity and skiers in a sense have to be even more creative then the boarders to find shit they can mess around on.

Second, I agree with all those people that posted about such an emphasis being placed on sw ups. They're cool and they look good but when your tossing 2 or more on a down rail it's not being creative its just making it the jib technical. 

Third  is we need more guys doing different grinds. Skiing right now is more a demonstration of just getting down the rail right now as opposed to how you get dowm. I've noticed a lot of hate over the years on guys who do "roller blader" grinds, but we are in desprite need of new stuff, the standard ski slide is gets boring to watch in a video. My hat goes off to guys getting creative in that department, with an espicially big shout out to NS member "asian allen" (I don't know him personally but watch his videos they are sick). Even guys trying nose and tail presses is sick.

I feel like there is a lot more room for self expression and creativity in snowboarding.. skiing hasn't gotten to that point yet. Whether it be tricks or the way we dress, individuality isn't as accepted in skiing.

We can pretzel... It makes an enormous amount of difference on rails. Not just switch-ups and spins on/off, but rails are so much easier to grip and hang on to because of this. This adds a huge advantage to rails in every way, much much much more than being able to 5050 would. I think the only time snowboarders have the advantage on rails would be a ride on cannon rail/pole jam with no take-off whatsoever.

As far as creativity wise, the way that your feet are on a snowboard gives an obvious huge advantage with over-all control over the board, not only with presses obviously, but the way you see snowboarders like Scott Stevens have a 6th sense for a board on their feet. This is the gap that I believe most people are talking about when they say the difference in creativity, and it is noticeable, but I believe the gap will lessen in years to come.
