Subaru question

im in the market for a new car (im 18 if it helps) and im either gonna get a outback sport or a wrx

and my main question is how much does the insurance go up

mostly looking for people my age or around there for help

ive had 0 accidnets and 0 tickets

if i forgot anything just tell me

get a quote online. probably wouldnt do anything if you just bought a wagon, but the wrx would probably be a bit of an upgrade.

oh and i think turbo makes rates go up. just because youre more likely to drive faster because you can. yeah, its stupid like that.

thats definitely false though. i have an audi 1.8t and my friend has a 3.0 without turbo, and his is faster and more powerful.



btw, those are two completely different cars. ones like a mommy mobile and the other is a hardcore machine.
and if you have 0 accidents now, expect a couple after you get a wrx, they were meant to be crashed, hence  the highest prices to insure

and chances are if there was a 18 year old in a wrx and a 45 year old, the 18 year old will be the retard revving at everyone at stoplights to try to impress a girl and will then go on to speed and crash or do something else stupid.

my friend has an 03 wrx with a lot of sti parts, etc

basically his car is faster than an sti, and he drives it responsibly (minus one speeding ticket he got when we were going to the mountain).

i think that his insurance isn't THAT much...

My guess would be you will be paying AT LEAST $2000 a year for a WRX.
Plus any tickets or accidents you may have.
Plus more if you get an STI or a turbo.

Call a local independent (not affiliated with any specific insurance company) insurance agency, and set up a free appointment for them to go over your options with both cars and lots of different insurance companies. Like everyone else says, there are so many variables in calculating insurance. Don't mess with online quote junk, just have a real insurance agent do it for free. Then compare the actual numbers and decide which car to buy based on that.

Lets just say this much... I have a 1996 Impreza LX 2.2L... and girls think its an STI...

I just ticked over 205k miles... i got it used almost exactly one year ago with 175k (yes, i've put 30k on it in a year... this is what happens when you live in the west and have to drive far between places) It's rusty, and some of the paint is even rusting off... but it's red. it has a ski rack on it. it has stickers all over it. It's fast when I want it to be (its almost the base model, and with all that mileage it still has 150hp or something... all i did was throw on a cold air intake) it gets good mileage, it runs on regular unleaded 87 octane (or 85 if I go out of California and I want to be cheap) so I dont have to pay an extra 20c per gallon... (Apparently it adds up good).

Essentially, I paid like 2 grand for this thing, threw on another grand to get it running really well, with a little more power and a better performing clutch... threw stickers and a rack on it, and nobody really can tell the difference unless they know cars... and as many of us know, those girls you're trying to impress? probably dont know all that much about them, if they even give a shit...

In my honest opinion? go for something that's going to be able to haul all your stuff up to the hill, get good mileage (STI's and WRX's dont really get fantastic mileage) look decent, and be reliable... get an older impreza wagon.. with a 2.2L engine, and as few miles on it as you can find... You will thank me later after buying it.

Oh, and if you buy one with a stick shift, you'll be stoked to find that the car can drive uphill in 1st gear without having your foot on the gas... the engine has loads of torque. (this makes it really easy to teach dumb blondes how to drive stick... it's how I taught my friend's airhead sister to drive a manual )

I have an 02' Outback Sport and it's legit.  No problems, good gas mileage. And when big manly trucks go slow in-front of me and slide off the road I pass them with a large smile on my face. Insurance wise I am at about $100 a month for good coverage... (20 years old)

I drive a 2002 WRX with a swapped STi engine and some other upgrades.

I am paying about $1200 a year through citizen's insurance group, for some reason they consider my car a "Family Sedan" and I am not going to correct them.  It is cheaper to insure than my dad's 2002 Mazda Tribute, go figure.

However, despite cheap insurance, the lower gas mileage (15-28 depending on what Tune I'm running) as well as the high maintenance cost (remember, maintenance isn't just engine parts, we're talking tires and brakes which you will need high quality) you also pay for Premium gas.  The higher octane you run, the better your car will run and the longer it will last, so 93 Premium is preferred.  The gas and the maintenance is the real kick in the teeth, not just the insurance.

sean, if anyone is confusing your 96 impreza with a wrx/sti they're either an idiot, or not from the states, where the wrx/sti trim did not exist in the body style. i'm guessing yours has the OBS hood with the scoop and vents in it?

OP, i used to have a 98 legacy gt that i paid about 500 a year insurance on. i got an 09 impreza premium 5dr last march, which as far as insurance is concerned, is the same as an OBS. same body, slightly different suspension and features, but MSRP is the same if i remember correctly. i'm now paying $1100 a year. no accidents that i've claimed aside from deer, which don't negatively affect your insurance rate, and my last speeding ticket was about 5 years ago, so that's no factor anymore either. it hauls everything i need to the mountain, beach, etc with ease, i've gotten as good as 40mpg with it driving conservatively, and it's pretty easy to maintain since there are no real 'high end' expensive components like the tires, brake pads, etc. that are higher spec like the wrx. plus, if you get the 5 speed, and know how to drive, it's a pretty fun car. swap out the suspension for some better bits, and it would be super fun on twisty back roads, and way cheaper than a wrx too.

No hood scoop or anything of the sort. And yes, they are idiots, but thats the point i'm trying to make... MOST PEOPLE ARE IDIOTS and dont really care. They just see subaru and impreza and they think it's a wrx or something... girls dont care.. people that arent that into cars dont care... I've had people ask me what upgrades i've put on it... i've done like nothing special to it... it's pretty hilarious how 'sick' my 2000 dollar, used, rusty, base model impreza is to other people... but hey... get away with what you can is what I say.

are you going to by the car straight up or finance it? If you finance full coverage will be required. I'm at the state minimums on a 02 wrx and it's ~$800/yr. Even though I have a few tickets you will probably not be able to insure it for cheaper, I have multi policy discounts, marriage discount, over 25 discount...


GL did u report the swap to your insurance? Do you have a value agreed on?

Insurance on the WRX will be totally outlandish. Insurance on the outback sport will probably be fine. WRX has one of the highest insurance premiums of any car in its price range because so many retarded 16 year olds run them off the road and blow them up. Only reason I didn't buy one.

Sorry for the thread jack but my 1992 accord just blew it's transmission and I'm in the market for a new (older) car, for the people that have subarus is your cost of maintenance relatively low because I've heard that they can be more expensive than others

Today I got rear-ended at a stop light pretty hard.  I got out and saw the girls car that hit me missing it's front end.  I was afraid to see the back of my 02' Outback Sport, but there wasn't even a scratch.  No dent, no cracks, and everything works fine.  I have about 130,000 miles on it and have not had a single problem with it thus far.  I will only buy Subaru's. (If mine ever actually dies.)  Also note that on all subarus the door latch doubles as a great bottle opener...

But seriously, having a turbo and a 2 door "coupe" doesn't affect your insurance as much as you might think.

I know, it's a Saab, not a Subie, but my insurance is about 130 a month with a good student discount.  I say go for the WRX.

the price difference on insurance between the wrx and the normal impreza is pretty huge not worth it. i managed somehow to get 3 speeding tickets in my first 8 months of driving so that may have made the difference but the base impreza is still a great car pretty zippy and roomy

i found a 98 legacy outback for 4500$ but it has 173k miles it has new radiatior axel assemble and clutch
my dads friend ( a mechanic) said they go down hill after 100k miles what exactly goes wrong and is it easly fix or like 4k$ fix??

That doesn't good like a good deal at all. I've had a Forester that had 130k miles without any major problems but thats not always the case. Honestly I would even consider buying a car with more than 150k miles and even 100k is pushing it.

I'm 20, no accidents, 1 speeding ticket on record and its about 1200/ 6 months and thats decent for first truck I've ever owned. and its a military insurance cause gieco wanted to rape me with 1700.
