Whatever happened to halfpipe skiing in the 2010 olympics?
Probably because pipe is a much more realistic goal considering snowboarding pipe is already happening. I would say slopestyle in the olympics is far fetched to say the least. (although i agree, it would be awesome.)
i would absolutely love to have slopestyle or pipe, or anything that represented our sector, if i will of the sport of skiing in general
but the IOC already thinks that there are too many judged events in the olympics, and word on the street says that they are trying to not only not add any more, but are trying to cut back on existing ones
In pipe tricks, there is a certain level of objectivity.
But in Slopestyle, there are far too many variables for an Olympic result to have any integrity. Plus, the IOC would insist on their own vetted judges, and god knows what would happen then.
slopestyle would be stupid to have in the olympics for skiing. i know, it would be awesome to have something completely new and unique just for us while the boarders are still only in the pipe, but the judging would be incredibly hard.
switch, unnatural, tech vs style, grabs, and more...
the dew tour and xgames create enough drama with judging, and you all know that there would be tons of threads on how shitty the judging was and who some noob thinks should of won because they saw one trick from someones run. slopestyle is the most unique and free part of this sport and we dont need the olympics to create rules and regulations on what tricks you have to throw.
with halfpipe, its kind of alright, since there isnt much that someone would have to do other than maybe a right and left side spin, a zero spin for a styled grab (snowboarders have to do one big air with just a grab) and combine everything with large amplitude to win. there isnt much you can change in halfpipe. slopestyle is completely different though. they would do horrendous things to the part of our sport than everyone knows as FREEstyle.
i really think that there is no need for skiing in the olympics honestly what positive things would it bring to the sport it is allready recognized enough i think skiing is to close to an art to be put in the olympics and i dont need some olympic judges defining the sport for us. fuck it whats wrong with things the way they are now
I don't give a shit. I do not see why we need to legitimize or sport to the masses through the olympics. I don't care if pipe or slopestyle gets, "exposure" or things of that like. Sure, possibly for a select few skiers, it would. But for me and most others, it doesn't make a damn bit of difference. It won't influence how I ski. And I don't care how the masses view skiing.
Well when it comes to halfpipe it comes under freestyle skiing in FIS and for it to become an olympic event FIS freestyle would have to get rid of aerials, moguls or skiercross because they have 3 event spots and they can choose whatever they want to put in there (halfpipe, slopestyle, acro, etc).
I as much as anyone would love to see halfpipe in the Olympics but the best chance at this point is 2018 before it will get in, it is unlikely for 2014.
Slopestyle wont happen for a long time because you would have to create another venue, whereas the halfpipe already there. Also there is so many variables.
When it comes to judging there is a change coming as slowly but surely the older judges are moving on and younger ones are coming in that understand sports like halfpipe, so if pipe makes the olympics its not going to be any different to the x-games judging. I know judges get a lot of flack but until you try and judge an event you cant comment. Im a judge and its a tough job, but dont get me wrong its fun. Im young and I ski park/pipe all the time so to say judges dont care about the sport is so wrong, judges do what they do because they love the sport because its not for the money.
come on guys, this our own fault! our attire is not suitable for the olympic games. nobody wants to see thugs and o.g.'s rocking tall tees with gold medals around their necks. they're looking for that skin-tight image like you see in figure skating.
this. I dont care at all about "exposure". It won't affect me. I don't want pipe or slopestyle to become like moguls and aerials where tricks must be perfect and the way they are done is regulated. If it happened, that'd be cool, but it doesn't really matter to me.
To be honest, I really could care less if halfpipe skiing is in the olympics. Halfpipe is a dying portion of the sport. Skiing is getting bigger on its own. I have never seen so many kids on twin tips at my mountain as I am this year. When I tell kids at school I ski, I am getting less "that gay" or " snowboarding is better" replies than ever. We don't need the Olympics to grow our sport. By the time we end up in the Olympics, we will be big anyways.
Also pipe cud be more realistic for the reason that u can see the whole run in a pipe without lookin at a screen. with slope u can only see 1 hit or 2 depending where yur standing.
There is no longer any such thing as a "trial year". The last time a sport was a demonstration event for the winter Olympics, was freestyle aerials in Lillehammer, 1994.
It does look quite positive for 2014. FIS has committed to making the attempt to get it in. FIS did not make any attempt to get it in for 2010, which is why it did not get in for these games.
I don't even know how much longer snowboard pipe is going to last. The judging for any type of true freestyle snow sport isn't anal enough for Olympic judging. It's not black or white, there's too many variables, even with halfpipe events. A race is easily judged, fastest time wins. A freestyle event isn't...you've got the element of style and flow to incorporate into proper judging. Plus the sport progresses way too fucking much to have any type of standard. In four years, who knows how crazy shit will be, and the anal Olympic committee won't want to keep changing standards and rules. IMO the only reason why its in there is to bring a younger crowd to the Olympics, people stopped giving a shit a while ago. Now they plaster Shawn White's face all over every Olympic event and people watch it.
Fuck the Olympics. It's overrated, but then again generates a retarded amount of money.
