People seem so intent on cleaning up the forum the last little bit that they actually thought it was a good idea to make eheath a mod. It's a terrible idea. But that being said, deleting everything remotely stupid and banning people who say dumb things is actually in our power. The problem is, then you guys get SUPER pissy and call us nazis and complain and whine and moan about that, instead. So I am curious, and I think I have asked before but, an updated poll:

Which do you want? Heavy moderation that gets rid of all dumb threads and bans people without warning for being idiots (in which case no, we do not have time to explain these actions, hell I don't have time now), or dumb threads and annoying people?

You clicked on all 159 members to make sure they weren't a mod? Cause you know that not all the mods are green, right? A lot choose to remain blue. In fact, there are two mods on right now that aren't green.

You seem worried about pissing people off by increasing moderation. But the only people that would be getting pissed off, would be the people that deserve the deletions/bans/kicked off. I would love to see a crack down. In the good days of Snowboard.com, when it was kinda a big deal, there was heavy mod presence, and the website was very clean (not full of shit threads). I understand that NS is much bigger, but I would love to see a skiing forum, that is focused on skiing. Keep the 4chan shit out of here.

i think some mods need to be removed, you know the ones that hold personal grudges and take the internet way too seriously. remember back when they deleted the useless stuff, but not the blatantly entertaining stuff. those mods back then knew what was up, but only a small number of the new mods do a good job. that being said...

i think as long as only pricks got their shit deleted that would be alright.
but im pretty sure thats how it is anyway.
and with the whole evan heath being mod. as long as he didnt abuse his power and delete anyone or anything he didnt like, it would be bad having him as a mod. i think it should be the members of ns to decide this too.

The moderation crap just gets moved in here and falls off the first page after a bit. The "So high" stuff definitely needs to get deleted. Since I made this thread I have been deleting and moving a lot of stuff out of NSG. I don't know if it's made a noticeable difference though.

Glad to hear. People are definitely whining already though. Currently have some kid trying to convince me that I shouldn't have deleted his "sick nike shoes" thread, which I did on the grounds that there is a multi-page thread on sick shoes in general, and he thinks his deserved its own thread because it's about nikes specifically.

Everyone hates getting their thread deleted and we are for the most part going to ignore you if you respond to the automated deletion method with "Why??? What was wrong with it?"

Why not lock NS down and make it invite only.  Supposedly newschool skiing is a tight-knit community so the worthy shouldn't have much of a problem getting hooked up.

It's not like guests lose out anyway though, they can access just about everything we can.  Hell, I lurked as a guest for almost a whole year before I made an account.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize who should be banned and what should be deleted. There have been too many little trolls running around as of late. Actual intelligent, funny trolls such as lilhorsey and a few select others inspire more humor than disruption. It's the ones who run around spamming the fuck out of NSG and posting Interior Crocodile Alligator in ever goddamn thread that deserve to go. From what I've seen, the mods are intelligent people; intelligent enough to make decisions that are correct. The Banhammer needs to be swung to keep these little fuckers in check sometimes.

I didn't really want to get into this thread, and I feel like I am just repeating what everyone else has sad, but I think the trolling/4chan memes are the worst. I don't necessarily think the "stupid" threads should be deleted (i.e., "Wallisch's new sponsor?"), but I do think the threads that should be deleted are the threads that are obvious trolling threads. Mods, use your power to see if these members are trolls/aliases, ban them, and send a warning to their real name.

That being said, I have nothing but respect for the mods on here. This is like a full-time job in itself, and when guys like scott has his own company and duncan is doing his thing filming, and JD doing his law thing, it just goes to show the amount of love and appreciation for our community.

Haha same du is now all uppity because he can't grasp why it's not okay for him to ask where he can kop knock-off wu tang nikes. Seriously? After the "fake red bull new era hat" debacle on here you don't get why nike might take issue with that?

I think the worst part about deleting threads on here is dumb kids trying to get you to explain to them in great detail why their thread was stupid and needed to be removed. I do not have time for that.

I don't think you need to even explain. Just say it was deleted. Ignore any other comments they make to you. Don't worry about hurting some 13 year old's feelings. You're making a lot more people happier that the website is getting to where it supposed to.

The problem is they're 14 years old and half of them are rich kids. The response may be to throw a temper tantrum and spam, which is more work for me, then I have to ban them, which is more work for me, and then they start making aliases to ip-check, which is more work for me and anyone else with an admin panel. Seriously, that happens.

I think there are a few things that can be done to allow us to make this place better but one of them has to be a change in culture... ie, if you guys up there want to shit talk Rowen, that would be precisely what I was talking about earlier when I mentioned the internet equivalent of suicide by cop. Don't like the staff or what they do? Enjoy biglines.com.

JD, you pose your question to NS like everybody is in agreement on how NS is moderated. The way I see it, the older members (in both age and length of membership) tend to prefer NS to be more tightly moderated; and the members with post counts in the low hundreds who don't spend as much time on NS and see the site as just another cool forum like youtube or 4chan prefer it be moderated similarly. This cultural rift is always going to exist and you're never going to be able to make both groups happy. It sucks that it's a lot of work for you guys, but to the NSers who matter, the people who go to NS events, who are donators, who have met the admins, who buy gear on NS, it would be appreciated to have at least NSG and BS/T a little less polluted. If that means bringing on a dozen more mods and losing a few entertaining threads and members, I'm all for it.

I'm all for strict modding, it CAN work without effing everything up, just look at how well some of the pinkbike forums are run.

Not only will it get rid of all the trolls, people may actually be able to get something done and not have to sift through pages of shitty reposts and crappy 4chan memes.

Holte, I actually said exactly the same thing in mod disc earlier today - that if we do what needs to be done and delete a ton of crap out of NSG some will be happy, others will call us nazis and throw e-temper tantrums. We are talking about a possible solution to the problem. As far as stricter BST moderation goes that won't happen; we do not get involved with that forum at all anymore, transactions are between whoever wants to enter into them and we have nothing to do with it. You guys take the risk of getting scammed if you want to buy stuff in there.
