People seem so intent on cleaning up the forum the last little bit that they actually thought it was a good idea to make eheath a mod. It's a terrible idea. But that being said, deleting everything remotely stupid and banning people who say dumb things is actually in our power. The problem is, then you guys get SUPER pissy and call us nazis and complain and whine and moan about that, instead. So I am curious, and I think I have asked before but, an updated poll:

Which do you want? Heavy moderation that gets rid of all dumb threads and bans people without warning for being idiots (in which case no, we do not have time to explain these actions, hell I don't have time now), or dumb threads and annoying people?

Bans for trolls, annoying people, idiots, and overly offensive people. My theory is if you guys ban people for these things, people will get the idea, and start to make threads and posts that don't make me and others want to punch our computer screens for how stupid it was. I heart NS too much to not want to come on anymore because I hate a lot of the members.

it's got a little out of hand recently, could you have a cooling off period where the site doesn't accept members for a few weeks just incase it is kids from 4chan and other places trying to fuck stuff up

and in that cooling off time kick ass to all the trolls and n00bs trying to disrupt the site

though this is true, and i do post stupid things myself, there is a line between a little dumb and a waste of bandwith. and half of nsg right now is a waste of bandwith.

god i wish ns were back in the dark ages still

that was way better, before i even had an account... up until about a year and a half ago or so, ns had been better... but it's on a decline

i am personally not pro-eheath as a mod because i think that he would honestly take things from too much of a personal or subjective p.o.v. and ban too many people/delete too much stuff

we all already have plenty of mods, so get to the hammering.

also is it possible to set a lock so that each ip can only have 1 account (with exceptions of siblings like me and my brother, because neither of us are trolls)

If they actually made me a mod, i wouldn't abuse it and i would probably wouldn't be as harsh as i am with my words.

As for the 1 account per IP, i live with 5 other people all sharing one internet, all of which go on NS daily, that shit would be annoying to deal with.



And JD, comeon you know you'd love to see me as a mod hahaha

there's a fine line between funny and annoying, i assume it's in your combined power to discern those. some of the nsg accidents are useless yet absolutely hilarious, while others are obvious troll mating grounds. i think heavy moderation without question should be done on the really annoying kids, but lighter moderation on the idiots who we laugh at because that consists of like 70% of not just nsg but this whole site

we definately have enough mods. as badass as eheath being given banhammer powers would be i don't think its necessary. i think the mods just need to ban trolls and get rid of all the shit. you know clean things up. i know its not possible to get everything, but its definately possible to do more than is being done right now.
ns is like my bathroom. i love it. it makes me happy. i want it clean and stench free so i can enjoy all it has to offer and have an amazing time wasting large portions of my day there. if someone sprayed diarrhea all over your toilet/walls you would mop that shit up right?

How did this thread turn into another "should eheath be a mod" thread? Eheath will never be a mod. So enough about that.

The question was whether you want the mods in general to basically delete everything we think is stupid and / or ban people we think suck at the internet. I think you guys would just bitch about that instead of bitching about the forums being too full of crap.

and do so quickly

i say eheath for mod. he is on here all the time and all of these would be done well

i feel like he would take things seriously as well, like a real job. i mean, he gets to sit near a computer and snack all day just patrolling and pleased with himself for banning that troll.

Here's a solution. How about the mods begin clamping down on the stupid posts/threads, especially on NSG. Rank the forums for modding priority (i.e. NSG would be heavily modded, while Gear Talk would be more open). Make sure that it's clear to members the modding priority of the forums. Give first-time offenders a 24-hour ban. Give repeat offenders a week-long ban.

At the same time, develop a "member bill of rights," created collectively by NS members, mods and admins in Site Discussion (to avoid the perils of NSG). The member "bill of rights" would be a new baseline for mods to work with. If someone gets a weeklong ban and thinks that the ban was unreasonable, the member can, within 24 hours of the start of his/her ban, appeal it by emailing an NS email address, something like [banned@newschoolers.com]. If the member tries to create an alias and make a thread like "WHY DID I GET BANNED," they should get IP-banned. Banned members should have to adhere to a strict protocol to appeal their ban. For the appeal process, have more than one mod (ideally, not the mod who banned the person), review the thread or post in question. If the reviewer finds the thread to be in fault, the ban continues. If not, the ban is cut short at three days--72 hours.

The only answer is strict moderation I believe. All 4chanesue threads deleted, dumb posts and threads deleted, grammar mistakes deleted, claim threads deleted. Bans to anyone who continuously posts stupid shit.

JD knows of my strict moderation skills, therefore I would also like to throw my hat into joining this new NS Strict Squadron, or SS for short. We could even have cute little uniforms, with a separate forum where we keep all the banned noobs, a "rehabilitation" forum of sorts. I could totally goose step to that idea.

this. mods do a perfectly fine job. im all for banning trolls and deleting their threads, but this a forum with a lot people on it and lots of threads are going to be made and this should be a place for people to discuss skiing. If you dont like a thread then dont write hate comments and let is die out, the bad/annoying threads dont last long if people dont care. Why is everyone so uptight about people posting in a forum? Just let the mods do their job because they are doing perfectly fine.

If threads are really dumb and/or are made by trolls then by all means delete them, if not, stop caring and let mods do their jobs. its just the internet.

if you dont like that then go nazi for a month and see if people like it, cuz it might work

To be honest, talking shit to the mods about moderating decisions should really be the internet equivalent of suicide by cop... no other way this place can be effectively managed at this point. The site has outgrown its design, it's really tough to moderate efficiently. Much as I like having a unique design, vbulletin is way, way better for moderating purposes.

NSG is an area which is pretty unmoderated.
Trolls get banned on the regular and the other forums get a lot of attention as far as moving threads from place to place and getting rid of the shit. It's just when there is too much shit that we need to make decisions on how much moderation is too much.
It seems like you guys would prefer more threads/members to be deleted than they are at the moment? (and assume that we wouldn't have to justify our actions in every case)

Posted earlier but want to add to what I previously said.

I think strict modding for about a month would be good. It would convince the NS populace again that the mods actually do exist. I think lots of members think that they can get away with anything because the mods don't appear to do anything in NSG. NSG and BST should become strictly moderated forums, leaving the others with lighter moderating.

And the idea of making eheath a mod does raise a good point, though the specific idea isn't great. We need more mods. I mean, right now as I type this, only one mod is on, while there are 159 members total online. That ratio is way too high. The other forums I use have a ratio of 1:25 to 1:50. Which, with over 100,000 members, we can't really get down there too easily. But I think 1:75 would be a reasonable short-term goal.

Perhaps a long-term solution to this problem would be having different levels of mod-ship? For example, a three-tiered system. I've seem similar implementations on other websites. Level 3 would be the lowest levels of mods--they could have the power to delete threads and posts, but not the ability to ban members. Level 2 mods would have all the current powers that the mods have today. Level 1 mods would be the admins. I think something like this would do a lot to eliminate the useless posts and threads.
