How badly do rails and boxes kill bases?

im want to try and get into doing rails, boxes, and other jib things in the park. but im worried about my bases. how badly do rails, boxes, and the different types of jibs actually damage your bases?
i have a pair of rossi scratches bc. the bases are in near perfect condition right now so im kinda iffy about doing jibs if my bases will get too killed.

also, im planning on making a jib box for my backyard. would 3 tubes of 2inch diameter pvc be good for a box?

they are just skis... the bottoms will get messed up no matter what. a nice rock will do way more damage than any box or rail

to be honest your bases will be fucked.... but not as bad as you may think


to begin with when you are learning rails most people find that their bases get trashed, but once you get your smooth on then the damage is virtually nil, most scraps on my base are easy sorted just by hot waxing and they disappear


the thing that i find causes the most damage is rocks, nothing destroys and lovely bit of slippy ptex like a lump of granite!

pvc is good

Yeah, your skis are gonna get trashed if you ski alot of park. believe me. i've  skied on my skis like probably fifty times and i've already got like seven cracks in my edges from rails. but thankfully they are salomon with the edge armor and its still holdin the edge togeter

I realized you'll need a new pair of park skis every year if you ski alot if less then every 2 years. Skis are meant to be used so just have fun and don't worry about the bases.

Finally, get a job this summer so you can buy new skis when you need them.

i have never had more than a little scratch from a box or rail that wasnt fixed by a good waxing. core shots and deep gauges in the base usually only come from rocks and things like that, because when you do boxes and rails you just slide over them, which wont put a deep cut in your base.

my bases are ok, my edges have some nice marks on them but thats probly cuz i havent dulled them yet, but my edges still work fine

Skis are meant to be thrashed.

A few edge cracks and scratched up bases is hardly anything to worry about

generally rails in parks are super smooth and won't do anything that cant be fixed with wax. You always do have the risk of fucking up your base/edges bad though. I would say i spend 50/50 park and not, and I kill WAY more skis on rocks than on rails.

If you ski a whole season of park, expect your skis to get fucking trashed. Everything from the bases to the edges to the topsheets.

Depends on the ski and skier more than anything. I beat the shit our of my invaders and it showed in the edges. I have put even more rail abuse into my current Atomic Punx and have zero edge damage, besides them being completely rounded underfoot.

your bases will get a little wrecked, but that doesnt mean you should avoid rails all together. park skis are ment to be used for rails, so unless your strapped for cash and cant afford new skis every couple years (i know ive been there), go ahead and kill it!
