Anyone else here absolutely hate college football?

Everything about it annoys the shit out of me. I always try to give it a chance, but as I am watching the Oregon game, I keep getting reminded why I hate college football.

I'm a guy who played football for about 6 years, and I enjoy both the athletic part, and technical part of the game. Watching college football is just as technically advanced as a backyard football game. Some of the bombs that thats QBs have the balls to toss up are pretty amazing to me. The fact that they can get away with such long balls is crazy. It just speaks to how little defense really matters in college football. The scores they get up to are just comical sometimes.

No playoffs, they turned their championships into a group of games entirely run by corporations through sponsors.

The poor kids don't get fucking paid. The chances most of these kids have to get into big league ball are tiny, and they are still demanded to play through injuries and risk lifetime problems for their school. Tebow was being pushed to play through a fucking concussion, and they still make a killing off these kids through sponsors. They are basically playing for free, while the NCAA whores the entire league for profits.

All of your money/playoff reasons is why the better players give school the finger and go to the pros.


I enjoy watching college football much more than pro football.


And im guessing most good football players are getting scholarships so they are getting at least 50,000 probably minimum and then an education.

think about it this way: how many of these players do you think would have been able to go to college or afford college without an athletic scholarship? most of these players have spent their entire lives training to make it to this point. Being able to play on national television, and win a bowl game is something no one can take away from them. Just because they don't get drafted doesn't mean their life is finished.
As for the money part of it, if college athletes were paid (which 50 grand a year for school is already being paid) then it would be just like the pros. College football would just be another league filled with schools who could pay the most for a player instead of having to out-recuit each other for a player. College is so much better for this reason, and that's why some of the stadiums hold 100,000+

I prefer watching college football over the NFL or CFL any day.

How can you compare it to a backyard football game, if you honestly think that, I really think you have no idea what you're talking about.

I'm not even talking about the schools paying them directly, I mean sponsors. These kids should be able to market themselves in the short 4 years that they will be playing ball. It will put them in much better standing when they leave school, and won't allow the NCAA to use them as free marketing.


Also, about the guy who said it's not like backyard ball. Do you think that half of those big plays would even see the light of day in the nfl? You can't throw big in the nfl, cause they would just pick you off each time. Honestly, what successful college team has a running based offense? None of them, its just insane football with massive lob passes and subpar defense.

Apparently Congress introduced a bill that would attempt to abolish the bowl game system in favor of a playoff system. I don't know how they have the power to do that, but I swear that it's true. Look it up. I agree by the way.

the major bowls (rose, sugar, cotton, orange, gator, sun, capital 1) have all been around for over 70 years, and the Fiesta has been around for almost 40. Tradition plays a large part of the bowls so don't just think its "all about the corporations".

Also, it would take such a long time if there was a playoff system since teams are only used to playing once a week. In a tier of 32 teams (which is less than what play in the bowls right now) it would take five weeks to get through the games meaning it would end at the end of the first week on January. That is with no two week break between the regular season and the bowls, which happens around mid December.

yeah and that doesn't happen every game, and when it does it's because a lot of these guys are STUDENT athletes, not aspiring pros. The smallest margin of college football players go on to amount to anything in pro football. Teams don't always consist of NFL superstars to be, but usually exceptional athletes who are gaining an education while doing something they love.

To say college ball lacks the play calling and strategizing that professional ball does is far from the truth. A variety of offensive formations have their roots in college ball.

I love it. Watching physical phenoms play with average kids who got lucky in high school to get drafted. This season sucked tho.

yeah i like it, probably just as much if not more than pro football. its more exciting, they do riskier shit, people get tooled on.. and how do you figure they dont get paid? im with you on the corporate shit but the good players get scholarships to good schools, and in most of those cases im sure they wouldnt have had a chance to go to such a school

i sort of agree but also disagree.

ill start out by saying i watch A LOT of college football. especially during the regular season. as i could care less about most bowl games.

completly agree about the corperate sponsors/ money inovlved in bowl games. for example the bowl selection procees. take last night for example UF vs CINCY. cincy had a good season but they are garbage compared to florida. everyone in the country knew this but still the bowl commitee puts florida and cincy in the Sugar bowl so something like Bama vs Utah didnt happen again this year. yeah florida probably woulda beat TCU or Boise but it wouldnt have been a raping.

another thing i hate is the coaching shit. like with Brian Kelly this year and many more before. absolute bullshit for ND to be stealing coaches when some teams are still playing for someting. just because your team sucks and your not playing for anything doesnt mean other teams arent.

Notre dame needs to join a conference. although they suck it is unfair that they have an advantage of not being in a conference.
the mountain west confrence needs to add boise St. and maybe another team and split into divisons and have a conference championship(like the big 12 and sec) and then they deserve an automatic qualifier.

as far as your saying teams dont have defense. look at TCU and florida. these teams both have great defenses. the reason why teams win is because of defense, sure if you can score thats awesome but if you can stop the other team from scoring thats better. (sounds retarded but its true)

The scholarship thing is a good point, but consider all the extra money those kids could make from sponsors? They put their bodies on the line, and are demanded of as much as most NFL players once you get into big teams like The U and USC. The NCAA blocks them from getting sponsors merely because they don't want that cutting into their profit I believe. Most of these kids won't make it, so they should have a couple thousand to start a career after college.

To the guy above me, you are totally right about defences. People always say "defenses win chapionships" because that is true. It honestly doesn't matter if you have Ocho Cinco, Adrian Peterson, Payton Manning, and Fitz all on the same team, if there is a good defense, they would be shut down. Even if that team has a shitty offense, all they have to do is run the ball, and defend. Though saying that, I still believe that defenses in college ball are a joke. The way some guys can get open is ridiculous, its like all the fundamentals go entirely out the window in college ball. I just don't think college players are nearly as intelligent as NFL tier players, that is why most NFL coaches can't make a team work in college ball, they confuse the kids with tons of plays and strategies that fit an NFL tier team.

yeah see i dont know as much about the money/sponsorship and gameplay aspects as you do. from what youve said i think i would def agree that its bullshit the way the sponsors work. and i would also agree with the defense thing probably, but i gotta say its fun to watch when things are so wide open and huge risky plays are more common. and things like going for the 2 point conversion at the end of the game to win rather than just tying it is something i dont think you see too much in the nfl? maybe im wrong

I very rarely watch the games..only exception is the Army/Navy/Airforce games. Ill watch those any time.

to those that were curious about the scholarship stuff when new coaches are brought in there is a great piece on right now on outside the lines on ESPN. its more about basketball but there is some on football.

Yea, OP, i think you forgot to include the fact that a lot of those guys, at least at the schools that make a "killing" as you say, on probably on scholarships. Those could total over 100 grand if they play all 4 years, plus imagine if they paid those guys.... they are like pro athletes but younger and dumber. They would just buy phat whips and party and get into trouble, because they would probably think of themselves even more as super stars. Imagine if they were allowed to have sponsors and stuff, not only would they have classes, practice and games, but commercial shoots and stuff like that as well.

I think college football is better to watch than pro because they actually care about winning and not about their status on the team and whether or not they will get paid as much next year.

I can't tell you, you are wrong for not liking it becasue i know plenty of people that dont like watching football, but your reasons suck haha.

Yep, I hate all 'Football' for a number of reasons

1)It's called football when there is very little use of the foot

2)It's ridiculously stop-start. In rugby, plays can last for 10minutes+, as opposed to the couple of seconds each football play lasts.

3)Unnecessary use of pads, to make it look more dangerous than it is. Rugby players run at each other at full speed, with just a shirt on. Football player barely move, and still need pads.

4)You need elaborate pitch markings to be able to play a game with any integrity, which, surpisingly, most kids do not have. You can play rugby on any patch of land.

5)The 'sport' plays second fiddle to the brands being marketed.They may aswell just cut out the middle man, the pretence of football, and force spectators to stare at adverts for however long a game goes on for.

College is wwaayy better than pro. The kids are playing for the love of the game! NOT to gain sponsorships and make the most money possible which is what the HIGH majority of NFL players are in there for. Im not disagreeing; everyone needs to find a way to make a living. But when it comes to football, I find it much more enjoyable to see people playing because they have a passion for the sport and not just because they want to make money.

Going back on when the thread creator said how defenses were pretty much nonexistant, there are plenty of great defensive teams in which the defense leads them to their victory. Take Ohio State (my favorite). They have consistently done well due to their shut-down defense. They shut down Oregon which ended them up with a nice little victory which very few people predicted (After all, Oregon is SOO fast! There is no way OSU can stop that!!!!!!). Well they did. Their defense did. They have graduated mmmaannnnyyy defensive players which now have a big impact in the NFL (AJ Hawk?).

I do agree that a playoff system should be installed. I think it can make all these questionable bowl game selections less controversial.

Overall,  as stated above, college is way better. Knowing that the players are competing at the highest level to win and succeed as a team is much more appealing than watching a player who sees every down as a check going into his bank account.

look to CIS football if you want to see kids playing for true love of the sport!

CIS athletes get very very few perks compared to players in the NCAA, yet put in just as much time for training, practice, film study, etc...

sure the athletes aren't the cream of the crop like D-1 ball, but they live and die on the football field, and it makes for very energetic, highly entertaining games.

i cant stand watching football period, but i'd rather watch college ball than the NFL. most mainstream pro sports in general are bullshit, except for maybe hockey. everybody has a "im getting paid and i dont want to be here attitude". I love watching college basketball because, although the players may not be pro-level, they play their hearts out and it makes for an energetic game.

but the BCS is a load of shit. the most fucked up "playoff" system i've ever seen. they should change it to mimic the NCAA basketball system
