I read this article in Powder (I think) a few years ago and it was actually pretty informative with facts I didn't know.  Anyone know what I am talking about?  In any case, I thought I'd start an NS one that everyone could add to.  I thought of this when a kid was asking about cold hands in a different thread.  So here goes, just add good tips about staying warm, saving money, helpful stretches/exercises, energy foods before you go, etc.

Tip #1: The veins that carry to your fingers are in the back of your hand, not near your palm.  So to effectively prevent numb fingers, you want to put hand warmers on the back of your hand.  I recommend picking up some surgical tape (type that sticks to skin well) from CVS/Walgreens and just taping one of those little handwarmers on the back of each hand in the morning and voile! you are good for the rest of the day.

Again, don't just put down "good advice", but maybe something people don't realize.

better than that, take a warm up run where you actually turn alot. pretend it is a slalom course, and try and move, and get into and out of all the positions you will get into when you are actually charging. most people just straightline, and gs turn their warmup run. the point of it is to warm up not get it over with.

Im going to go ahead and quote this to clear some things up.

While It is true that covering your head will make you warmer than before (no shit sherlock), the majority of our heat does NOT release through our head. That is a myth. You would lose just as much heat if you were wearing a hat and missing some other article of clothing. The important part to staying warm is effective layering using BREATHABLE fabrics to keep your core at the right temperature. Your body works to keep vital organs warm and functioning properly first and foremost, then spreads from there to your extremities. Warm core=warm fingers and toes. Cold core=cold fingers and toes.

As long as you have the right form then none of these will be bad on your knees. And the running helps build the stabalizing muscles in your legs as well as your lower abs.

lunges, lots of lunges, do different types of lunges. also squats, dead lifts and riding a bike or using an eliptical for 45 minutes once a week or so. do core exercises and also try to incorporate yoga to help with flexibility, balance and core strength.

This works for me it might not for you but if you get alot of toe bang cut your toe nail's shorter or more offten this will decrease the chance of a toe nail peeling back or breaking off.

Can anyone give me some good excercises to do at home
my skis are heavier this year and I can seem to do 180's on flat ground anymore
I don;t want to bail on switchups the whole season
I can do them on blades but I just need to get stronger legs to make it easier

Ok thank you I only landed a few at the end of last season and they were sketchy so that will help alot.
I don't know why I didn't do that.
I know to do it for jumps but I thought that it was just a quick hop.

If you forget you goggles or gloves and its 5F up on the hill, roll to the lost and found and ask if they have something you could use for the day. Today I did just this thing and got to rock a sweet pair of 80's Scott goggs. Face shots all day, I would have been fucked without them.

Hahaha, this.

Even worse, do not fart in a one-piece. It will slowly make its way up to the top then come out the neck and gas you in the face.

Last but not least, do not fart in a gondola. Even a hooded chair is pretty bad, but a gondola... damn that can be unpleasant. Especially when you're in Niseko and you had Lars Longcox giant Nachos for dinner last night. Straight up ruthless.

.... i mean, sure it helps once you're in the air, but to effectively set the spin, you need to shift your whole body, be it slightly or dramatically. Pop and get your hips and shoulders going evenly and you will spin.


also, i'm sick of seeing people skiing backseat because they think it looks cool- first off, it proves that you have no idea how to ski, and second: i can guarantee you that you will be able to spin and flip more easily if you stand up and stay in an athletic stance.

Make friends with the cooks at your local mountain, being a cook and a skier i know that seeing someone you know come through the line makes you feel good and the extra food you can get in return make a hell of a difference at the end of the day.

Straps off, especially in the trees. If your straps are on and your pole gets caught in a branch you can easily separate a shoulder.

Best energy drink has got to be Steaze Energy,

Its sick, main ingredient is Yerba mate which is some crazy energy tea.
Always keep a can of this stuff in your bag/car, its key when you need a boost.

use the hand dryers in the bathroom to dry your yowie/bandanna/any face mask. It works so well.

"a" pain pill does not do much man, still pretty funny though. put your boots in the passenger leg space in your car if you are alone, then the heater will warm you as well as your boots. making use of the air thats blowing on the other side of the car anyway. yep

And pole straps ALWAYS on, no matter what. I have gotten my pole stuck in tons of shit, never pulled out my shoulder. If you wear them the correct way you will rip them right out of whatever they get stuck in before it rips your shoulder out.

WRONG.

The other day i was lucky to have put my strap on but the correct way so that it comes right off my hand. My pole got caught on a fence and as I didnt know, going fairly slow too, it whiplashed my arm, HARD. It hurt a bit even though my pole came off.

If i had been going any faster, and the strap was on, it easily could have ripped my shoulder right out of the socket. I am VERY GLAD I had put the strap on properly.


Moral of the story, you are wrong. Your shoulder will get ripped out before 80% of the stuff it could get stuck to gets ripped out.

Great tips. I personally like to ride straps off around the park and on easier hills. I'd rather hike than land on a pole.

Never carry your boots by strapping the two power strap together, it can screw the power strap up.
Theres some strap you can buy, or put it in a bag
