Ski patrol told me I cant ski in the trees????

SO yesterday at keystone my friends and I decided to go catch a few runs in the trees because they've gotten some decent snow the past few days and we've been killing to get some powder underneath our skis. We entered the trees at the top of the trees right below the lift, mind there weren't any ropes our signs that indicated the run being closed. I knew the run was closed a ways down because of bare spots so we exited the trees onto the groomer which according to the ski patrol that came up to us after we came out was closed because it was after 3. I never really keep track of time when Im skiing because im having too much fun but apparently the run was closed for grooming. The ski patrol said he'd clip our passes but he didnt cause he said that we looked like reasonable guys and we told him it'd never happen again. The question that I have though is how can ski patrol clip passed for something like this. Pretty stupid in my opinion because by no means did they try and close the trees that we entered at the top of the run. It was pure coincidence that we came out of the trees onto a closed run. Mind I didn't duck any ropes what so ever.

O yea my point though is he told us we weren't allowed to ski in the tree's???? Never in my 8 years of skiing summit county have I heard this/

Seems pretty ridiculous. I have had similar problems. At my local resort in NY the best skiing is in the trees so me and my buddies always do whatever we can to ski in the trees. They close the tree runs after dark apparently, which isn't posted by sign, but in the resort rules. I have been told by ski patrol that they would clip my pass if i was caught again, but i have never been to afraid of ski patrol actually doing such a thing.

yea for real, this was my second time this week they have threatened to pull my pass away. The first time was because i was going to fast switch and that we have no control when "skiing backwards".?

I've never had ski patrol try to take my pass (just lots of verbal warnings for going too fast on the easy runs), but I would probably peace out haha. It'd be cool to have a reversable jacket for if that happened. Just slip away then turn your jacket inside out, maybe take off your hat and goggles, boom, different person.

that seems pretty stupid that you mighta gotten your pass clipped because of that. same thing at the mountain i ski on, we went through some trees and into a powder section and the ski patrol went nuts... didn't threaten us with taking our passes though.

that does sound pretty outlandish. i wouldnt worry about it too much. sometimes ski patrol will tell people that a run is closed in order to preserve a powder stash for themselves...

It's simple, you came out of the trees onto a run closed for grooming, and it was late. It's not a coincidence, you just didn't know where you were when you went off the trail and you wound up on a closed run. It doesn't seem like the patroller cared about you being in the trees, he just cared about you getting taken out by most likely cracked out keystone groomer.

Talk shit on ski patrol all you want, most of the keystone ones are actually really good guys. Plus no matter what those guys will save your ass anytime.

I wouldn't say he was talking shit, try reading what he's said again.

But to the OP . . . . . yeah just 3 days ago patrollers threatened to pass-jack me for hiking the closed sidecountry at my mountain. I know this is different from your scenario because I technically knew the terrain was closed, but I was just wondering if very many people have had ski patrol follow through with their threat to clip passes? So far for me they've all been empty threats.

i was doing a ski race and me and MIKE JONES were warming are legs up by taking sum runs and ski patrol said we were going to fast and if we weren't racing he would have clipped our pass.

Technically, the patroller was in the right. You are supposed to enter and exit the trees onto open runs only.

Be grateful he just gave you a warning and take the new knowledge away from you.

i was skiing on a run that wasnt marked closed where i got on it and was bitched out by ski patrol, 5min later by some guy on a sled, and the lifty over the same thing. I hate summit county for that reason. i have never had issues with ski partol ever, ive been stopped but never verbally abused for something that wasnt my fault. I treat patrol with respect all the time, my dad was one and many family friends are too. Its rediculous when people join just to try and be the cops of the mountain.

Lets get this clear. By now means am I calling out the ski patroller for being a dick, he was actually a nice guy and I treated him with respect when I talked to him.

ya he may have been a nice guy it doesnt mean he isnt retarded. in my mind the goal of a successul ski resort or mountain is to fullfill the needs of all types of skiers whether it be easy groomers glade trails etc.  and if there was no indication that the trail was closed then he would have no right to clip ur passes.

Idk... this thread is kindof stupid of you ask me. I mean you didn't get your pass taken away. and of course you can't ski trees after dark. that's just common sense. I mean that's great that you're concerned but it doesn't deserve a whole thread.

Keystone's been like that this year, their crackin down on super stupid shit, like riding switch and jibbing downed trees, I don't know whats up but safety patrol and even the ski patrol guys are on a major power trip so far this year, no bueno man
