Yes - before I got into Skiing, i was a sponsored mountaineer and spent time in the Himalayas making first ascents (India / Pakistan...as well as other places....) ... BUT Everest IS a TOTAL GOON SHOW if you go anywhere near it via the South Col route (I.e. the Gaper Route....) .
I'd only go to Everest if i could climb it from the Tibet side, via the North Ridge, not Clown-Ville at the South Col.... that sh*t is enough to keep me away forever simply because your risk of dieing due to simply the numbers of people on the route is pretty high...
Plus the North Ridge is Cheaper, South Col is a $60k vacation.... dragged up everest a bunch of hard ass sherpa's.
Kids on here have a lot to learn about mountaineering, and alpine climbing.
You don't just start on a mountain such as K2. You need to work your way up to bagging peaks like that. There are many skills that you need to learn in mountaineering that could save your life.
Your best bet is to find a guide service that specializes in alpine climbing, ice climbing, and mountaineering. They will help you learn the skills necessary to make you a capable climber. Then you need to continue to practice and hone these techniques.
Even better is to take the necessary coures to become a certified guide: http://amga.com/index.php
A good place to start once you have the skills is usually on the higher peaks in your area. Mt. Washington is a great one, but also look at the 14ers, and work your way up.
Alot of people climb everest just to say theyve done it, sure you know its not as hard as others, but the cute blonde over there eyeing you up doesnt
do K2!
I remember when I used to jog up everest, wing suit it to the peak of K2 and straightline down with my spatulas on sheer ice days as my morning workout. Damn knees these days.
