I'm glad our president feels the need to use tax payer money to go to the complete OPPOSITE side of our country to stay in a super expensive place for vacation, dragging Secret Service, and a ton of his bulletproof cars with him as well most likely. Yeah, great for him, wish I could go on a 1million dollar vacation at the price of the American taxpayer.

I am no Obama fan, but seriously? He went home. It is the holidays. Presidents go on vacation, although I doubt you could fully call it a vacation because I'm sure he is working in Hawaii as well. I'm not gunna bash him on this one.

His "home" as you say is TECHNICALLY in Illinois cause he was a Senator there. Home is no longer Hawaii. And if he were going "home" to Hawaii why is he staying in a $4000 a night place? Bush had his ranch, Clinton had his big mega house in Arkansas he went home to, Bush Sr also had a ranch, and Reagan had a house in Cali. All they had to pay for was the travel expense, not the expense of staying there.

Really people? Bush was on vacation after vacation and you flame Obama for going home on the holidays. He's not the one personally coming up with how to fix the country, presidents are just the decision makers. Besides, it's not like anything would have happened in the 2 weeks he has off if he worked them.

Then what about the summer vacation as well, and all the time he takes off to go to the opera, etc.

I dont care if hes going home, but we are in desperate need for some solid leadership right now. You dont see solders in iraq just flying home for a couple weeks to take time off.

He was on vacation at his Crawford Texas ranch, which last I checked, is MUCH closer than Hawaii is which means the cost for him to get there is way WAY cheaper. Also, Bush didn't have to pay for lodging in Crawford, Obama is, and considering these hard economic times where he is telling the country we need to do our best to boost it it seems rather wasteful spending close to $4000 a night+expense to get to Hawaii+expense to haul Secret Service to Hawaii+expense to fly his bulletproof car out to Hawaii=WAY more money than it cost to fly Bush to his Crawford ranch.

Okay yes it is expensive, but the President is also probably one of the most underpaid positions in the world, the amount of work he must do and the responsibility he has compared to the money he could be making elsewhere is ridiculous, and that goes for all presidents. Believe me, there is a ton of other spending going on right now that I am far more worried about than the President taking a vacation with his family. In general I normally agree with your politics Panda, I just think that this particular case is a petty argument against Obama. I'm sure if you looked back at other presidents, there are many things that would appear just a frivolous spending wise as this vacation.

Every president before has gone on similar trips. It's no big deal. Really, for what he does for the country (I'm not talking about the issues at all, but more the "3 AM in the White House" argument), I'd say that it's fine. I mean, it's not like he's ever truly on vacation. He's the President of the United States. Does that make sense?

The dude could pay for me to get probably 4 different law degrees on his salary. Yes, he has responsibilities, but he also has advisers (like a Sheriff has deputies) to help him with his job. Majority of the time, all the President does is sign/veto bills, go give a pre-planned talk to other world leaders, and then smile and shake hands.

I don't like Obama and never really did after the primaries were over but I would still rather see Obama right now over the Bush we had during his second term. Bush of his first term was a decent president, him in his second term he was a total douche.

Bush went on more vacations that just to his ranch. I remember him going on vacation to Tamarack Resort when it opened, for example. How is that not frivolous spending that is only about satisfying another business? In addition, it was Idaho Gov. Dirk Kempthorne that invited him there. A year later, Kempthorne became Secretary of the Interior. Coincidence? I think not. Corruption at it's finest. At least that isn't going on in Obama's case.

400k/year is not very much in respect to the duties of president. It doesn't matter that he has people helping him. All the people helping are selected by him and he is responsible for everything they do bears the burden of what happens. Panda I know you are not saying being president is anything near a easy and non stressful job. Look at what other occupations make as well in reference to the 400k salary, a fuckin shitty MLB baseball player makes a million per year. And please don't make the argument that there is only a select group gifted enough to play sports professionally, because there is only 1 President. Same with corporate Cxx's and Presidents and VP's, they all make way more money.

the cost of flying a president to Hawaii from DC instead of Texas from DC is pretty small, the fuel cost is gonna be pretty small relative to the logistical costs.

For the previous 8 years it was democrats turn to complain about presidential spending, now it is republicans turn.

In my count I still think obama is under bush in private "vacation" time by a few weeks. I use quotes because my money says that they both do/did more work and deal with more stress on these "vacations" then you or I do.

Oh, and he left before the terrorist tried to blow up a plane.

The one thing I really REALLY didn't like about Obama was he got in office and said he was "just like regular Americans", and then what does he go do? He goes on vacation at that huge East Coast resort town that the Kennedys always used to go to where the houses are all like at least 2.5 mil a piece to buy......

Fuel cost may not be a huge difference but I thought Bush would take Marine One to Crawford and Obama probably took Air Force One to Hawaii. Don't know the difference in price between airplane fuel compared to that used in a Helicopter. Also, Obama probably needed a car transported which means another plane, and a cargo one at that.

I know its hard to fine good information on the subject, but read up on what the secret service takes with them, you will be surprised with how much crap they will drag with them so a president can shake a hand. For instance when they fly to an airport/country with out a secure fuel source they will fly in fuel, on another plane.

Both would have taken a car, on another plane.

it really just lowers most peoples opinions of yourself.

Instead of getting pissed off at Obama for his personal habits, which are really no worse then that of most people, I will just look at where the country is in OCT 2012 vs. JAN 2009 and decide what the man did to contribute to those changes, and base my opinion on that.

As of now he is pretty much still untested, for the most part he is still getting used to the office, which is fine, something I would expect any new President to do. He has made some good decisions and some bad ones. Overall I think he has done more good than bad. It is still, however too early to decern the true impact of his decisions.

I do understand that many republicans are determined to hate him, but than there were many hippies who were determined to hate Bush. My main problem however is that both of these parties limit themselves to name calling and attacking personal habits rather then the actual policy that they are following.

Iran is a pretty fragile situation right now. Despite its many faults it has a fairly stable government and is not being butt fucked by terrorists and civil war. It is suffering from mass protests against the government. However they are no more massive then those in the United States in 1968, those following MLK jr's death, and those following the Rodney King incident. Our government did not quite crack down in the same fashion, but it was not that far off (think kent state).

Iran will survive its current turmoil, and will come off better for it. Right now I think Iran will be a stable democracy before Iraq will, long before Afghanistan will. Getting the US involved politically will not speed things up. Call for an adherence to civil rights by all parities and thats it.

Failed/flawed democracy.... Iran is kinda screwed in the near future cause they still have the old school theology system of government mixed with democracy. Those two things will never really coexist well I think.
