Disadvantages and advantages of having a small ski

i usually ride a 171 invader but im going to be riding a 161 newer invader what will be the disadvantages to it and advantages if any i searched the forum coudlnt find anything about it

I think longer skis look better for some reason too, and yea ya wont go as fast cause theres not as much base.

short skiis= super easy to handle and turn. also when you start spinning in the park the turn radius is smaller so easier to do
slower. a bit harder to do rails but only if you're relying on nose or tailpressing, it should be ok if your railing on your bases.

I disagree on the rail aspect, I think its way easyer to do rails! You can spin like its your job so easy.

they go the same speed, but a longer ski will be more stable and allow you to go fast more comfortably. i love having long skis.

yeah i like my 171's but they are beat and i found a good deal on a pair of 161 invaders so im buying them

doesnt a longer/fatter ski go faster due to more snow to ski contact? hence the principle behind the line lizzie? a shorter ski that is wider for more surface area so there is no speed loss?

you will have alot less stability at speeds, but with those skis i doesn't really matter because those things are noodles.

If you haven't already bought the 161s then don't.  You already ride 171 and going smaller would be really weird.  You will feel alot less stability on rails and jumps.

no. in college physics you will learn that friction doesn't depend on surface area. smaller surface area will create more pressure than a larger surface area and they end up having the same force of friction.

you learn that in high school physic too. no need to claim. however youre telling me if i have so bladed i would go as fast as is i were on 215 dh skis? i would just be less stable? seems unlikely.

PROS:

- Easier to control/ more manuverable

- Quicker spinning

- Lighter

CONS:

- Look gaper-ish ( if there noticably to small ) IMO

- Less stable at high speeds

- Slower

- Less stable off big jumps

wasnt claiming thats just where i learned it. in theory if the snowblades and the race skis had the same base material and the same wax job and you just put the bases flat and straight lined it you would go the same speed. but of course they do not make snowblades like they make race skis so this isnt realistic. but a pair of 171 and 161 invaders will go pretty much the same speed. you cant really argue will the laws of physics.

Is it me, or it should be Less Friction - More Speed? Since Friction will actually slower you, otherwise all diskbrakes (weird example) will not work... After all, longer skis should have less fristion due to their surface.. That means they will go faster and will be more controllable at high speeds since will have more "leverage" to go straight. That will also mean they will be harder to turn. Good example is Short Slalom skis and Loooong Giant Slalom skis.

Or maybe i'm completly wrong... sorry for double post, but it seems that the length of ski is not that critical to speed. It will depends alot on the actuall snow. I.e. longer skis will do better in all kinda of "bad" snow, while shorter will do better on goood groomers. Anyway longer will be more stable on landings, while shorter will be easier to spin and jib..
