Spend 50 bucks on the posidrive bits and a drill and a few pieces of scrap 2x4s to learn how to mount your bindings on, and you'll never have to worry about shop incompetence again. Plus, there's something very satisfying about mounting your own skis.

i know how you feel, i got instantly nervous the other day when i dropped my ninthward firstbloods off and the guy said, "what kind of skis are these, volkl bridges?" unfortunately they are the only shop within a couple hours of me and i need my skis quick so i just had to go for it. I drew the line in right in front of him and told him twice where to mount it and i'm still a bit nervous.

I really want to learn to mount my own skis soon. Thankfully I've gotten to know some sweet ski techs but I always would get my skis mounted wrong when I lived in VT. Tons of dumbass ski shop employees with no clue how to mount anything wider than 70mm.

if you drew the line infront of him and told him a few times it should be fine. but i know the feeling, just got my anthems mounted and was so scared the guy was gonna fuck it up but it was fine. it was at skirack too though and theyre like the best shop ever so you must be pretty nervous.

good luck with it though

don't you just love it when you get your skis mounted and they set the DIN at 3.5 and you don't notice it till your actually on the slopes?!

tech talk has an episode that teaches you how to mount your own bindings...after watching that it looks super easy haha. probably a lot harder than it looks but maybe worth looking into

Haha ya, got it back today... 35€ ($50).. Seemed pretty pricey to me but they did it in a few hours... They set the din setting at 6 though :/ So got to change that... Why would I buy volkl bridges and px12 jib wide bindings if I aimed to use it at din6? So every time I land a jump, or ski in powder I double eject?

And for some reason he selotaped the skis together... BUT! The bindings are mounted in the right place, so I shouldn't really complain too much.

i get butterflies when i'm about to drill into a new pair of skis

but when i go to my shop i go in the basement with them and watch so i'm never too nervous...i also totally trust them and i draw a big ass obese line on my skis to show where i want my skis mounted

but with my ON3P's i think i'll be shitting bricks because they're the first new skis i'll have owned in the past few years and, well, they're ON3P

I took my skis in to get a mount and i told the guy like 3 times i want them right here and he even put tape on them showing where i wanted them a week later came in picked em up WRONG spot sooo ticked got a remount  2 days later

I wish I could help all the NS binding mounting needs, I'd be happy to answer questions to the best of my ability, none of you should have to go through "binding mount anxiety"(BMA).

I read threads like this all the time and it makes me wince for two reasons... one, you should be able to confidently drop your skis off at a shop and know that they are going to be mounted correctly and well taken care of. Two, as a shop owner and loooong time ski tech... how is it possible that there are ski shops that can cause BMA by even employing techs who don't know what's up.

To be fair, our shop is family owned, and the same crew has worked for us for a long time; we don't have to deal with the turnover or the training of incoming techs but regardless, if I knew that people were standing at our counter, and were full-on BMA-ing about what we were going to hand them in regards to getting skis out of the backshop, I would certainly want to know about and fix the problem.

Sorry for the rant, just a guy with the capability of easing BMA who wants to help.

I'm happy to state as a ski tech for 5 years, i have only once ever miss-drilled a ski and unfortunately it was my own, but luckily only 1 extra hole.

He specifically says at the beggining of the episode you probably won't be able to do this at home, he uses a jig which no one mounting at home will have any access to. We should have someone make a mounting at home tutorial

Ya, those self mounting videos are kind of misleading. I had an old pair of skis  laying around and tried it and it was such a pain in the ass, for me anyway. They came out alright but I'm not sure i would be comfortable using them everyday.  Usually, everything looks easier on videos than it actually is.

having worked in a shop for 9 years now, i would absolutely not recommend anyone mount their own skis unless they absolutely know what they're doing. i've had to freehand FKSs onto my fujatives a few years ago because the shop didnt have a wide enough jig. it was a huge pain. having done it a bunch of times, it's not that hard to use a jig and mount your skis properly, provided you've got the right tools. if you don't have a jig and the proper drill bits, its not very hard to drill straight through the ski.

Yes, I do, and for good reason. Brand new Afterbangs were dropped off last week only to find out they drilled the screws through the god damn base. The best part, they tried to give them to me and shuffle me out of the shop hoping I wouldn't realize what happened. But I did - And shit went down.

i mounted my afterbangs and when i cam back they were like

"well....the first time we mounted them backwards"
"???!?!?!?!!!"
"so we went out and found a new pair exactly like these and remounted them the right direction"
"ok..."

the reason i know that they are different skis is because the old abangs had white bases and the ones i am using now have green bases(an upgrade IMO)

yes! im dropping my new chronics off on wednesday to mount them and im nervous already.
mounting them myself isnt even an option though, i know id do something to mess em' up, so then again the store mounting them will probably end up better than anything id do. ha
