Powder troubles

So we got 2-3 feet at my home mountain this weekend and it was the first i'd skied in deep powder with my surface watch lifes from last year in a length of 180. I'm 6'5 235 lbs. and i found myself wishing for more length and width and maybe a bit of a rocker with all that powder. Now i had a good time but got stuck quite a bit and sunk a lot too.

Normaly the hill we ride at is so bad we nicknamed it Ice Mountain but this was an exception. Now i was thinking about getting another pair of skis to be good powder days but could also handle the complete and total shit. One pair i had in mind was a pair of K2 obSETH'ed that i can get for relatively cheep. I'm on a low budget but i'm open to any suggestions. thanks

SPARKNOTES: Looking for powder ski that'll do good on variable snow for not too much money and am looking at a pair of obSETH'ed

I actually have 180 watch lifes, and I ski in utah, so i can totally see what youre saying. I was in a similar situation and I decided to buy Surface Live Life 2's (one life) and I couldn't be happier with the pow capabilities and skiing in crap. They are pretty stiff and can take a lot. I've also skied other similar skis like EP pros and softer skis, and they do well in pow and suck everywhere else. And also, i've skied obsetheds and they are alright, but for the price I think there are better options.

looking at getting a pair of lightly used seths for 200. I'd never get them for full price which was close to $700 dollars last time i looked. most i'm looking to spend is $500 maybe. I know i'm cheep but kinda what happens when mom and dad dont pay for anything haha

Which year are they? If they are just like last years (obsethed with rocker) then yeah go for it.

Then yeah for the price, that would be hard to get something better. I'd shop around a bit and just see if you can find something else.

Maybe Line Sir Francis Bacons. Fat rockered pow ski that can kill it anywhere on the mountain.

Correct you are. I read somewhere that next years Bacons are gonna be rockered though so I got confused.

Go older Volkl Gotama.
Excellent in powder and very versatile.
I'm on the 2008 model and the 2009 is the same except for the sidewall.

im lovin my line blends....they dont have rocker but are still decent in powder, plus you can take them anywhere, park, groomers, trees, etc.

Rossi S6 or maybe 7's. Good solid fatter ski, with twintips to handle diverse terrain. Pretty solid edges for ice, and decent flex for a kinda all mountain ski. I ride them for powder days, but I take them to the park when I need to and they handle pretty well on Vancouver early season ice...

6'5 235!?!?  on 180s!??  How?

Well first off, length...you should be wanting something in the 190+ range, hopefully mounted a bit back for extra tip length...and secondly, those 08 Seths aren't truely rockered, it's so little you won't notice it while skiing.  Think of your WLs, stiffer tip(still soft), much softer tail, and a few mm wider, heavier, and that is the difference.

Skis for you to keep in mind for powder/loose crud/spring type conditions are 193 EHPs, 202 Lotus 138s(I have them, best pow skis ever made), 200 DPS Lotus 120s, 195 Rossi S7, 198 Solly XW Lab(108 underfoot, not rockered), 192 Solly Rockers, Moment Comi 19_, 195(ish, can't remember exact, but I think somebody said 195 along the base 191ish tip to tip no slack)ON3P Great Scotts, and maby 189 Surface LL2s..

About K2 skis:  They are all(except Extremes) going to be fairly soft...All Seth pro models all the way back to Seth Pistols 03 have been noodels.  Fun, but noodles, and IMO you are too big for them.  Any number K2 gives for a ski, rockered or not, twin tipped or not, is normally going to end with an 8(Apaches) or a 9(factory) but they all end up being a __3.5cm along the base(so 4.5-5.5cm longer).

i dont get that too often haha. never really had a long ski before. I rode k2 Fujatives in 176 (somewhere in there) last year and got the watch lifes so they're the longest skis i actually have.

I've looked at all the ones you've mentioned above (especially the ll2s) but unfortunately don't have more than about $450 to buy some skis. Reason i want to get some is because i'm going to jackson hole in january sometime.

a friend of mine uses it for all mountain, he has dukes mounted and occasionally takes them out skinning.
he says the underfoot part still carves great on groomers while the rockered tip and tail provide excellent lift in deep pow. I've seen the ski myself and it looks very slick! not a real blinding, colorfull topsheet but it looks very smooth and artsy + i think its quite chipping resistant; it looked really bombproof...
+ i think tim durtschi uses the blog in the last segment of edias (he switches between the blog and the even fatter bentchetler) just to give you an idea of where the ski feels at home....

Yes! That's perfect. Very fun ski. My friend has a pair and he loves em, and I've ridden them before and they are super sick, charge hard, are good width and real sick all around. Seriously they are stellar skis hop on that.

sorry to burst your bubble but JH is pretty much getting skunked this year so i wouldn't expect pow. 

but what where you thinking using such tiny skis?  also how often do you get 1ft of pow or more per year?  cause if it isn't 5+ days  you are better off just selling you WL's and getting a bigger park/all mountain ski.  if you are a good skier(park doesn't count) then shredding pow on "skinny" sticks won't be hard to learn.

Apparently a lot like the XW Labs, but stronger! Not sure what that means but the person who skied both prefered these. DO IT!  All mountain and pow capabilities. You'll thank me later for the extra 15cm of edge and stiffness.

Actually bacons have straight up camber. Not early rise, not rocker, not reverse-camber. Just setting that straight. They do have early taper which tons and tons of people mix up with rocker or early rise.

Armada JJ's kill it everywhere!  Voklk Gotama's are sick, but a bit heavier.  They are a rad ski.  PM if interested, i work at a shop and would be willing to cut you a killer deal on either pair.  Scott P4's are supposed to be sick, but never rode those.  The JJ's are so SICK though!

People saying JJs..He's 6'5", a ski that measures 183 along the base and is mounted nearish to center is too short..

As far as real powder skis(I know what I said a few posts up are more all mountain with pow cababilities), DPS Lotuses(new hyrbids(bamboo/carbon) are cheaper($800) than the pure carbons.. Or, Solly Rockers would be great for you.

I've skied the nordica zeros, and its best for a centre mount. with them only at 184 as the longest length, they feel really short. I'm 6'2". 175lbs. wished for more length in them.

as for right now, I cant think of anything that would be cheap to buy. maybe look for a pair of old ANTS, or Czars. like last years rentals or demos. you can probabbly find a 190 czar cheap something. it would kill anytihng

Yeah, I can see how that would be short. There are some pretty long Ninthwards on backcountryoutlet.com right now that could be sick. They are under $400.
