i mean technically many people are terrorists. Even our government would fall in the category.

I just think they should scrap using it, because it seems to just be used in a way to drive fear into people these days. Terror alert turned from green to pink=you guaranteed to die today, lock yourself in the basement with a gun and a bible.

our restrictions could be much more lax, i think the thing worth pulling from this incident is that the group on the plane was charged in the right mindset--action. It was those sitting around the guy who beat him up and stopped the situation from getting worse.

"Shits out of hand these days". You're kidding me right? I was on a flight to detroit today and security took all of 5 minutes (people who say the security has been stepped up are bs'ing you). It was the same old shit: "Sir put your bags through the x-ray, sir step through the metal detector, ok you're fine". I though they were at least going to pat everybody down... So what if you have to wait for 5-10 minutes for security. I, personally, would be fine with waiting for 20-30 minutes to get through security if I knew it was going to be very extensive. If they were patting everybody down it would take an extra 10 seconds for each person and it would become that much harder to carry on a destructive device of any sorts. Oh and your idea.... sucks.

Maybe something has changed in the last year, or your ariport happened to be super mellow. Last time I flew, they searched my bag with everyones, random stuff went missing. I had to take my shoes off, walk through a metal detector. walk into the thing that shoots all the air at you. Then lucky me I got picked to be the lucky search contestant and got the wand down and everything. Oh yeah, and the lines were pretty fucking big for security.

First, when was the last time you flew?

And second, where was the airport?

Cause I flew just a year ago and all I got was the bag through the Xray machine, walk through the metal detector, and that was it. That was at both Spokane's airport and SeaTac.

I said I hadn't flown in a year. But the little extra searching/frisking was because I was the lucky contender for random searching.

Most of the times I flew out of bradley int. in conn. Cheaper flights.

the last time i flew, i had bags (checked and carry on) randomly searched....nothing went missing. Took my shoes off, had the air blowing thing, got the extra randomly selected screening with the wand, and on top of that, i got to be taken in for questioning. And despite all that, it still took me less than 15 minutes to get through security, and that includes waiting.

so it looks like either you're extremely impatient, or you just had an individual bad experience that isn't reflective of how it normally is.

It's definitely more security, but such is life. It's part of flying.

compare what you have to go through for air travel to any other sort of transport -- it's over the top.

i understand the threats that have come through -- but the majority of what TSA security does is confiscate toothpaste, shampoo, and any other everyday normal items from harmless passengers.

Consider these restrictions

for the commuter passenger who travels with a carry on only -- cannot simply pack his doc kit from his bathroom and hop on a plane.

you'd have trouble doing something as harmless as crocheting

there are plenty of regulations on the TSA website that are much more lenient that are actually followed in each airport. You SHOULD be able to carry on scissors with a blade less than 2", you SHOULD be able to carry on a normal toothpaste bottle that is less than 1/2 full, but good luck making your flight if you try this.

I've gotten tagged for extra security because i used my (state) school id in lieu of my license.

on the otherside, i've seen security people skip over examining bulky and difficult ski bags and found 'restricted' items in my bag while waiting around in the terminal.

The end point is, security is not making you any more 'safe' it's all about appearances. The real key to your flight not becoming a victim of the terrorists is to make sure that the passengers are ready to act to stop suspicious behavior, such as lighting a shoe on fire, or playing chem lab. It's not always easy to get a large group to be prepared to react; the more people there are, the more everyone assumes someone else will make a move.

Thankfully passengers are prepared and more aware.

ok honestly people. this shit is not hard. if there is no line you can literally WALK through security.

whomever it was saying they got flagged for using a school id instead of a drivers license. yeah i can see that. where was the drivers license?

its called being prepared. put you cell, wallet (except ID) into your backpack or whatever you are carrying on. take off the shoes. put laptop into bin. carry an EMPTY nalgene water bottle fill it later. make sure your pockets are EMPTY. not to mention just put toiletries into your checked bag.

if you are skiing make sure you dont have a burton Bullet Tool in your backpack, that snuck into my bag once and that caused a minor delay. (about 2min)

passport? state issued ID card? etc... i know everyone doesnt have a drivers licesence. Maybe its different where you are, but to get my state school id i literally went in showed some kid my photo id and snap. 2 seconds later i was presented with my school ID card. I guarantee you if i had given the kid a $20 he would have made my name be Justin Badalandabad (van wilder haha) if i wanted him to.

do you not have a drivers license? state issued ID card? anything? I just went and checked and it would cost a whopping $16.25 for an ID card here in MN. now i would think if someone can afford a plan ticket probably costing in the hundreds of dollars, they should be ok with $16..

how did you get your school id? you showed your photo id, like pass-port or dl or non-driver state id? Transitive property, state-school id's carry the same verification value as any other state issued id.

and no you can't just throw $20 and get a false name on your school id. Simply consider the security concerns on a university campus which are on par or above that of an airport or vehicle operation.

on another note, last i checked the country i lived in didn't require the citizens to carry around identification at all times. I only say this because i think the argument you're leaning towards would be in favor of such a mandate. I thought you were supposed to be a libertarian.

i dont think you quite understand. i go to a Community College that is quite literally "in da hood" there is no such thing as security. and the ID looks on par with my season pass for my ski hill. i would rate the security clearance at just slightly above my county library card that i have been carrying sense i was about 8.

but in the end it goes back to, do you, or do you not have a drivers license? Do you drive or not?

i do not in fact think there should be any sort of national ID, or even require a state ID. but when you are getting on an airplane, operating a car, things of that nature, yes, ill get an ID. again, they cost 16bucks. you go down to the DMV prove who you are, and BAM you have a State issued ID. i bet there is even a subsidy for people that cannot afford the ID. but if you cant afford 16bucks, then you probably wont be flying on an airplane.

question, would you be in favor of a federal ID card that gave you universal healthcare? talk about an invasion of privacy, a card that is monitored by the federal government. a card that links to detailed information about my health. does this pale in comparison to simply requiring a photo ID to get on an airplane? have you ever been ID'd when using a Credit Card? or dont you use a CC?

and compare the difference between your community college id, to one from MSU.

but my school is a state school, so technically the gravitas of the ID should be on par with that of the University of MN right? both state schools.

how did you get your picture ID from the Uni if you didnt prove who you were with a state issued ID from wherever you originated? or does the school not require a photo ID when getting a school ID.

still not sure why you're harping on my situation; I went to school in Colorado, traveling home to CT. Thought i lost my DL the few days before travel, or maybe just couldn't find it at the time of picking up my tickets. Either way, it wasn't like i was going to be able to get my DL before travel.

having a state school id, is a photo id that requires just as much verification as any other state form of id, and hence has no reason to be suspect for more security. The overall point that was contained in this particular anecdote from my op was that tsa regulations/guidelines and practices vary significantly, and security measures are more or less arbitrary, contingent on the prick going through my shit, or hassling me.

the moral of the story we saw over Christmas is that it isn't security that's keeping us safe, it's the passengers. quit backing big government here, and applaud the action of ordinary travelers. Terrorists are not a threat, we don't need more security, what we have now is above and beyond necessary.
