Noob backflip question

so i have tried back flips 2 times before both times i dislocated my shoulder. I'm trying again next week and, I was thinking if i brought my dads hockey shoulder pads (yes i know I'd stupid but i really don't care) if that would help if i landed on my neck or shoulder.

alright so i started trying and doing backflips yesterday i found that its all about the attitude you have going into the jump i did mine on a 26 or 30 foot park jump with about and inch of pow and the first one i did i went sideways after the flip and fell but the next i flipped a little harder and got around easy it is just like a trampoline except you spin slower a bigger jump would help but you have to know you can do it

here here is the thing i do go 110% but i use to dive and doing back flips on a diving board i would stay tucked until i hit the water. and i do the same thing for skiing i tried to spot it but because of diving i just can't.

Yes hockey pads would prolly help, youre not gonna land a backflip in hockey pads, theyre just too bulky. Wait for a powder day or learn it in skis on the tramp first.

first do em on a tramp and get the feeling of flipping while traveling forward, then try a backflip, but why a back flip you might as well try a cork or something, some people think there easier.

That's just stupid bud. I'm a diver also and i've been doing backflips forever, but i'm just now about to take them to the snow. you're SUPPOSE to spot for diving. you're not a dier, you just go off the diving board. I'm positive diving will help me with the trick because it's taught me keeping my abs tight, using your arms to boost you into the air, and spotting your landing. i would say confidence is truly the most important part of the trick tho

I landed my first backies last saturday.. and they're really easy all you have to do is throw it hard and commit. Set the rotation with your hips instead of your head like on a tramp..

Just commit and you'll get it no problem.

Have you been over rotating or under rotating?  If you are under rotating then you are not doing the same thing that you are doing on the tramp.  You have to look back towards the ground and spot, then tuck only if you feel like you need it to get around.  No pow, no prob.  Build a freestyle mogul style kicker and break up the landing area 1 foot deep with a metal shovel.  That will give you something soft to land in.  Shoulder  pads are not a good idea.  Wearing those will limit your movements.  I'd say you have a 90 percent chance of lawn darting, because you will have a tougher time looking back to spot your landing.  Get on a tramp and do 99 back flips before you do it on snow.  Do 33 layouts, 33 pikes, 33 tucks.   Get used to increasing and slowing down your rotation.  Last, when you are dropping in for your back flip attempt, think about f'ing the sky.  Throw your hips up and your head back to spot your landing.

Pause at 126.  You are inverted, in kind of a slight pike, but you are still looking up.  When you don't spot your landing, you don't know whether you have to rotate faster or slower.  "Look at the ground, you'll get around; look at the sky, you're going to die".  That's why you need to hit the tramp again.  Try some standing backs on the tramp.  Try some backs where you have more height than you normally do them with.  Make sure you are seeing the mat ideally just before you get to 180.

If your not going to commit and go for it, don't try a flip. You'll hurt yourself. If you really want to do one it's such an easy trick. If you can do it on the trampoline, or into a pool. Throw yourself into the flip, bring your knees up over your head and tuck, spot the landing and open up to slow the rotation if needed. For real, one of the easiest tricks, you just gotta commit, or you'll get owned.

Yuo just need to make sure you commit. I landed my first backlip because i threw it all the way and cam around. Your more likely to not get hurt if you fully commit than if you don commit and freak out in the air. Good luck

It's seriously the easiest trick out there, or at least tied with a 180.  Go in with a tiny bit of extra speed, lean back and spot the landing, land.  Cake.  I stomped my first one on snow back when I started doing them.  My buddy just told me it's the same as a trampoline, led me in, and I committed 100%.  So in closing, no hockey pads, that is just preparing for failure.  There is no trying with this, just doing.

I learnt them a few weeks ago, literally just throw it as hard as you can and COMMIT, the first one i did i over-rotated and its a lot better to over-rotate than under rotate. I would say now that they are probably easier than 3's. HUCK AND COMMIT.

Sorry for dub post but i forgot to say, use the whole of the jump, when you're at the bottom bend your legs, pump and go with the flow of the jump. Get a good pop and then spot your landing as early as possible, then you have pretty much made it.

Excellent, if you just huck and pray.  You need to feel confident that you have done everything you can to prepare and make it safer.  When we were at Woodward at Copper, a kid was working on backs into the foam pit.  He had gotten around on 4 attempts and then for some reason he stalled his rotation on one.  He went in head first.  He wrenched his neck and was in a lot of pain, but luckily didn't break anything. 

I've also seen a guy do a one and a half.  He never walked again.  I've stalled out and landed on my chest.  I've had a jump collapse while I was trying to back flip.  I was upside down and completely stalled.  All I could do was ball up and land on my neck and shoulders.  It was off of a back country jump so at least the landing was soft.

Not trying to preach, but this is definitely something you want to take seriously.

soooo heres what happen I was at at snow and who ever the kids from PA were thank you. i was doing some runs with them and out of nowhere a kid busted out a rodeo. I said fuck backflips im doing a rodeo. so he tells me just lean back and put your head over your shoulder. so i go to the jump look back and try to twist having no idea where i was in the air i could feel i was upside down and then i landed on my feet. i ask them was that a rodeo they said no instead i did an under flip so now i can underfilp and thats what happen.
