I used to have the biggest problem hitting urban style rails used to just slide off the side all the time. This season I have finally gotten how to do them....
1. I find the approach is the most important part. I like to come almost parrallel to the rail and I set my stance wide. As I come to the lip, give it a good pop so you clear the rail and try and relax. if your really tense you will try and throw your ski's over really fast and end up hitting the rail. Pop and get over that rail and keep your stance wide, your mind will tell you to stand up but get low and wide so you don't slip back and fall. I also dig my edge into the side of the rail like I'm setting a fs 270 out it just helps me stay on and for longer rails it works really well. Also don't look at your feet to much try and look at the end of the rail. I hope this helps!
