Ski Life

i was thinking how great it must be to be a pro skier, filming with level 1, have a chance at dew tour and X-games. Skiing all day in the best terrain parks, sickest urban rails.

but what happens when you get to old for the sport and the film companys and your sponsors dont want you on their team. what do you do then? not many skiers have a good education. so the way i see it, the good skiing life is only great when you are young. and when you get old, you end up with a pretty crap job and you fall back to when you started getting a carrer in skiing.

what are your thoughts?

you are an idiot. if by not many you mean a small handful, then you would be correct. Many of todays top pros have graduated or are working on getting degrees. I stopped ready your stupid post once i hit this statement.

i'd say jobs in the ski industry, film companies, team managers, etc. it's hard to tell because we haven't had a large group of freeskiers get too old yet. we'll see what happened.

No he's right. Sure Tanner Hall and Jacob Wester dropped out of highschool, but that's different with today's up and comers and some established pros. Most moved out west, and went to college while trying to establish themselves in the industry.

What ive noticed with a bunch of my older snowboarder friends who've been pro in the past is that by the time they're done being competitive they have a huge network of people they know in the snow industry. So from there they have gotten like Rep jobs or other jobs in the snow industry. Decent pay, and pretty good experience to let them move on to all sorts of other jobs.

iunno man of course there are some kids in college, but i wouldnt think the majority of professional skiers has post-secondary schooling. BUT i think this is the way it should be, a prfessional athlete at a legitimate sport SHOULD have to sacrifice a lot to get to that point, same as hockey, football etc...
furthermore, how legit would a ski scholarship be one day?

Freeskiing has been around for years....

Yes a large group have "got to old"

most just stick to the sport... they dont do it for money... they do it because they love it..

And most if they have been with a company long enough they normally get taken care of.....

But the fact is... Alot of older guys are just skiing for themselves noww...

What you said is very true, BUT, he was asking what they do for money.   Its expensive to ski and travel.   I dont think they have 401k for pro skiers.   Its like any other sport, once you get to old or injured, they cut you out.   Unless your Brett Farve, hes the only exception i can think of.

I have recently watched the "alli show" episode 2 with Tom Wallisch of level one productions and 4bi9. Half way threw the show he addresses this topic and he says his father didn't want him to be just some ski bum. So he is in his final year at BYU i believe i might be wrong; But the moral of this story is that one of the biggest innovators of this great sport we all love is currently obtaining a degree and bettering him self on the slopes and in the class room.

yea, these days he sucks RSN's dick for chocolate nickels and gets to eat the free buffet at some east coast shithole motel when he films segue spots with them for 2-days every season at some stupid 14-and-under park comp once a year...then they replay his dumb ass doing ski ballet tricks in perpetuity all day every day until i want to blind myself with a fucking screwdriver

THAT is the ski life, amigos...go to fucking college.

Most anyone self employed does not have a 401 or anything else and wont recoup as much SS either.  You just have to invest smart while you are in it.  Dont just spend everything.  Many start their own businesses or get good industry jobs.

This!!!  Pretty much sums it up.  Anybody creative enough to do what the pros are doing now is creative enough to figure out a way to make a living, either in skiing or out.

and to the OP more and more skiers these days are realizing that. people like douglas obviously go the industry route, since hes super involved with solomon as a company now. but if you look at kids like twall, walker, martini, they all go to school in their spare time, whether its actually on a campus, or online classes. tom said himself that he cant ski forever, and hes prepared for that.
