Seriously wtf?  everyone in europe speaks like 3 languages fluently, and doesn't think anything of it.  I took three years of spanish and can hardly communicate like a three year old.  Yeah im fucking jealous. Even when a thread is made by someone from europe and the grammer/spelling is messed up it still makes me feel bad cause it's soooo much better than i could do in their language, or any other language than english for that matter.

parlez vous francais?  jkjk i have some friends in france who speak like 4 languages and it just fucks my language skills up.  I have taken 4 years of french and can barely understand people

One of my friends has a Spanish grandmother, Italian grandfather, and his father is a French teacher, so is fluent in each, because he speaks them at home. So, he had three A-Levels (equivalent to APs) the age of 10, which meant he could have gotten into a good university, at that age.

Actually, I've noticed that most of the bad grammar and spelling on NS.com is actually from members whose native tongue is English. Maybe it's just sloppiness or the effect of 1337speak, but yeah. A lot of European countries have subtitles on TV, so many young kids can learn to understand several languages this way just by watching the Mothafuckin' Ninja Turtles for example, like I did as a youngster.

I think it has a lot to do with upbringing and what languages you are exposed to from a young age.
Having a French father and Chinese mother , and being exposed to the languages from birth has allowed me to pick up languages easier than someone who has grown up speaking just one.

I speak English French Cantonese Mandarin Spanish and Arabic (trying to get better at it)!

Obviously learning a language in school is not as effective as being exposed to it.  european countries are much smaller and its much easier for them to be exposed to other cultures and languages considering there are so many different ones all packed into a small area.  It becomes a cultural difference.

In the US & canada there's no other languages other than immigrant groups (which people shun for obvious reasons) and maybe french canadians count (i've heard they're a bunch of dicks as well ha!).  Mexico borders the US but other than the resort towns hardly anybody wants to visit mexico.

Also people world wide want to learn english for economic reasons meaning we don't have to learn other languages to do business.  And as we all know money is the driving force behind everything

It's quite easy to speak more than one language, I speak a couple languages fluenty and I have come to find that in school they don't do anything right as far as to learning a new language. Idk maybe it's because I've grown up with it but, if you lived on a continent littered with a shit load of country's within driving distance you would speak more than one language fluently. All the US has got is Mexico and Canadia and both are really far appart which could be part of the Amaricans speak one language ordeal.

my two and a half year old cousin is half american, half turkish, and lives in vienna austria.  she is fluent in all three languages, turkish, german, and english.

my sister has a friend from russia. she came to visit us over the summer and can apparently speak 5 languages fluently. when i go over there this summer, i am going to be embarrassed to say that i can only speak english, where as she spoke perfect english when she came over here.

I can talk and write in english.. mais je suis Québecois et je parle toujours francais peu importe ou je suis... But IMO, english's cool and I've always wanted to go somewhere that I can improve my english language like in BC or w-e..

I know exactly how you feel.  I was in Norway for 4 months and like 80 percent of the Norwegians spoke fluent English.
