Need some help, karma+++

K I know this is technically illeagal and there was that thread about people getting busted for doing it, but...I'm in a tight spot. I had to quit work and fly down to visit my gf in the hospital and it looks like she may be in there for another week. I was going to quit my job anyways to come ski the rest of the year but, because flying at christmas time is pricey and visiting hours are only in the afternoon I was thinking of teaching lessons for cash at the ski hill here.

Now the things I need help with is how do you set up lessons like this? Like do you approach people? If so, how do you do it? Or do you approch them?

Basically how do you get the word out with out arousing suspicion? Also what's a good rate to charge?

Thanks for any help and I will up your karma, I'm down 800 bucks, plus because of quitting work early I missed out on about 1800 (I was supposed to get 30 hours of OT). So any help to recover any of that cash would be sick as I haven't even bought xmas presents for my fam or friends yet.

So you want to independently teach some ski lessons? I've never really heard of that before, but maybe you could like just ski up to some rich gaper, and just tell him you are a pro and you'll teach him all day for $100.

Yea I was thinking of that maybe busting out in the park then when some guy that looks like he could use some help goes he man that was a cool helicopter I could be would you like to learn one?

Spend time in bars listen in to peoples convos. do the same on the lifts etc.

Then just say like hey i can take you out a show you some pointers.

Why not create some flyers?

Make some professional ones in Publisher, with the lilttle rip tabs,and throw your phone number on it. Make sure to price your lessons lower than the resorts. Then goto town and just bomb it, pasting the flyers everywhere

The only time I've seen this be the least bit successful was when an instructor quit and just taught his clients on his own.  The reasons why renegade instructing usually doesn't work and isn't worth it; you have to buy your own pass, you don't get any discounts on the mountain, you don't get to cut lines. Basically the only thing you have to offer people is your teaching ability so you better be awesome or famous.  You will most likely not make any money and get busted just for trying.  No hate, but that is the most likely scenario.

I've made some mad cash teaching my parents friends and their kids how to ski.  If they have kids, and you don't seem like someone they wouldn't want their kids around, then they usually prefer to have someone younger teach their kids... figuring their kids will probably listen more and enjoy it more.  I never charged much... maybe $80 for a half day and $150 for a full day (these are private lessons which usually cost $300).

Thus... ask  your parents if they have any friends who would want to have a private ski lesson, taught by you, for less than the cost of the mountain.  All money can then be exchanged later and not on the hill so then it should be all fine.

just go to the people at the ski hill you want to teach at and ask them if they need any new teachers

That's true.  Call yourself a babysitter or ski buddy.  Milk the parental connections.  Not trying to be the buzz kill, but to support yourself in a ski town where cost of living is pretty high, you will need to have people you can count on for the whole season or a trust fund.  It's kind of a weird season ski school wise.  Very few international instructors made it to the states because of the new difficulty in getting work visas.  The job market for non resort related work in ski communities sucks right now.  Many people I know who live around Vail and had more industrial related jobs lost them.  They are now back to teaching full time to make a living up there.

No your not a buzz kill man you raise valid points that I need to know. The good thing is, is I'm not so much as in a ski town but at a bigger center with a ski hill in or near city limits. And I don't have to worry about cost of living right now as I'm staying at a releatives.

You should force people to take ski lessons with you. Like if you see someone having difficulty, go to that person and start giving hims tips and etc. Then stick with them and try helping them with theirs techniques bla bla bla... and at the end of the day... BAM! "That'll be 120$ sir/ma'am."

And if they don't pay you, sue them for no good reason. >:)















Of course I'm joking.
You should post ads, or talk to friends who has friends who has sisters with brothers and twin grand father's...etc. You get the point. You can always give free lessons at first so you're recognized as a good solo instructor.
