Dyeing my Bern Macon

So I have died my FT Booter tongues and it worked really well so I decided to dye my white Bern Macon. Since it's white and I wanted it black, I figured i wouldn't need too much dye so I only used 2 packs and it turned out purpleish-greyish. If I dye it again but use say four or five packs, do you guys think it will turn out darker?

don't dye helmets, it weakens the shell

How would dyeing it weaken the shell? Plastic is an impermeable material. The only thing that's getting dyed is the surface.
