Replying to Final cut pro on external hard drive?

Ok ns'ers idk if this is the right website to ask this but i figured i would give it a shot.  I dont have a mac but a lot of my friends have them and same with my dad bc he uses one for work.  I was thinking about this today in media productions (we use final cut pro) and i was thinking if my teacher let me barrow the disk i could but in on a external hard drive and take it from mac to mac working on my projects.  it's just and idea and i have no idea if it would work but i figured someone on here might know.  + major KKKK for useful posts.
