LEICA lenses- whats the big deal?

im debating between the canon HF 200 and the panasonic HDC tm20k

so i went into 2001 audio/video and the guy there was ADAMENT (sp?) that i have to get the panasonic because of the leica lens alone. but he didnt really have any proof or like evidence/example etc that this leica lens was better than the canon's.

if it makes any difference, im just going to be shooting outside at the hill.

well leica's rangefinder and slr lenses have excellent build quality and are handmade, but I have a feeling that Panasonic just slaps that name on there to convince the unsuspecting buyer of quality that's not there, just like Sony putting Carl Zeiss all over their P&S cameras.

ya so for the original Leica rangefinder 35mm series the lenses were hands down the best glass you could get. And even today those rangefinders are still hard to beat.

I dont know this as a fact but im not sure that the panasonic glass is actually in anyway incredibly better than anything else. I think its more using the Leica name.

The HVX/HPX glass is average at best.

thats sick. wouldve sucked if it broke, but its a tank of a cam

and to horner, the leica's on modern panasonics are just using the name, but its not terrible glass. hvx's have solid lenses

I wasn't saying it's bad or anything, but it's nothing special either.  For $5200, can't complain too much though.
