Who gives a shit if man made global warming is real?
It's still important to cut back on our dependency on oil. Drilling destroys habitats and pollution hurts people in ways that aren't global warming related for example, lung problems.

woozy....epic post. Definitely a good response to these stupid videos, but I also don't agree with some of the points you raise. I think that you mischaracterize the degree to which scientists within the community are opposed to Global Warming. To me the scientific community is fairly unified in their position, aside from a few outliers with differing opinions. From wikipedia, which I think is generally reliable:

Everyone in this thread is underestimating this problem. We are going to see water shortages, which will cause wars. We are going to see flooding and drought, which will cause food shortages, which will cost wars. We are going to see crippling storms, which will cause looting and disorder, spreading political unrest and, of course, wars. Isn't the cost of doing nothing far greater than the cost of preventing the problem in the first place?

Regarding the emails ("Climategate"), they were taken out of context. In short, they were talking about how to set up the graphs so as best to analyze the data--something that is done in the scientific community every day. The fact that they are calling this "Climategate" is tantamount to an insult. I've had it with people trying to serve a self-serving political agenda just because it is a financial nightmare. If you look at the greatest problems we as a society have had to solve, very few even come close to that which we are facing now. It is natural, in this situation, to take the easy way out and do nothing. But, as I stated above, our survival hangs in the balance. And really, it can be compared to the financial crisis. Congress, in many ways, throughout the Bush Administration, kept doing nothing, kept doing nothing, and then, when the point of no return finally was passed, the cost was the issue. If you had done something in the first place, this never would happened and the cost would have been far less than had we continued on the path we went on. But really that's the basis of our government system; doing nothing until absolutely necessary or it's too late. It's happened before and it will continue to happen. Guess what? We have this issue. It is imperative that we solve it. It needs to happen now.

And, on a final note, even if the emails are true, and this is a huge cover-up, the data is skewed, whatever--wouldn't it still be a good idea to rethink our environmental policy? We could reduce our dependence on Middle East oil, reducing our ties with the nations that we don't want to have ties with. We could really lead the world in the creation of a new energy economy. That would create jobs, foster economic growth, innovation in the marketplace and collaboration between the major world powers. It would promise cleaner air, cleaner water and a cleaner environment for generations to come. And we as skiers have to take a look; do we really want to take this risk? Palmer Snowfield has been shrinking overall during the last 25 years. Horstman Glacier has been shrinking overall during the last 30. And Blackcomb Glacier has been shrinking over at least the last 25. Do we really want to take this risk?

It's already gone there, come back, and gone back again.

think its pretty obvious that the talking heads and politicians would get a hold of the phrases and use them for their agendas.


the more important issue is if these scientists violated the peer review process.  i don't think its been conclusively shown either way at this point.  although it is difficult to argue with Nature.  They know whats up.

im not saying its happening or not, but like someone said earlier climate change doesnt not mean warmer temperatures.  Most locations will experience colder temperatures first.

i dont get why every one is freaking out so much about global warming period.. yea it sucks and yea we should be more careful but it is definately not something to freak out about, my thought is that the poles are changing, north will be south south will be north. and with that comes different weather patterns...as we are seeing right now...

You bring up excellent points, and I fully agree with your treatment of my attitude. It's just that none of the "science" I have heard from people who deny climate change seems to follow basic principles, not only of climatology, but of chemistry, geophysics, biology, and so on.
