took my mom's vw beatle out for some mad drifting, just hit that esp button then drift mad cyclones... almost got stuck when i hit a big patch of ice though

I completely disregarded the "snow" in the title. that isnt horrible for cars as trying to do it on bare pavement. which i seeall the time and its lame

my question

we got some snow last night, some slushy heavy wet snow, which i think would be optimal conditions for drifting

now i woke up at like 11, and by then it seemed that everything was plowed

where can i find an unplowed parking lot/street (parking lot is better cuz i need to learn)? and ideas?

No you aren't going to destroy it. In fact, if all you're out there to do is to drift, slide, spin, etc, turning traction control off is almost better for the car.

The way traction control works (in simple terms) is that it automatically adjusts the brakes and power being put out to each wheel throughout the drive. When the computer senses that control is being lost in one (or more) wheels, it moves power to the wheels that still have traction (That's how AWD works). Either that, or it automatically adjusts the amount of brakes being applied so as to keep the car in line. All track cars run without traction control on, as it hinders performance.

When drifting intentionally (especially in AWD cars) in a car with electronic components/technology such as traction control, you're kindof fucking with the car's head. When the car begins to slide, it immediately assumes that the driver has lost control, and does everything in its power so as to allow the driver to regain control. By moving power around to different wheels, or by applying brakes where needed, traction control is intended as a safety feature for those who simply lose control while driving. When drifting though, if you don't turn traction control off, you're simply wearing down the system. As such, turning traction control off (when you intend on drifting) is somewhat better for the car. By turning traction control off (in most cases), you lock up the diff, and allow for a more 'raw' driving experience. It becomes much easier to drift, screech corners, etc. However, one must realize that it is considerably more dangerous to drive like this, and the traction control should be turned on immediately after the fun is over with (turning it off will make it more fun by a mile teehee!).

I'm really tired, and I'm not sure if that actually makes sense, but I hope it helps.

super informative post, thanks man. its crazy how effective the traction control is, the wheels rarely spin when accelerating/turning/starting off even when you try to, and when they do start to slip the car computer systems quickly kick in and do an amazing job of keep the car going in a straight line/through the corner. but its just so fucking fun to turn that shit off

my e-brake sucks balls

and nineoh7, i've tried adjusting the cable many times - something got fucked up when i fixed the rear drums, and i dont care enough to check what the problem is..

Heres what you do, wait for a day where it snow, and then anytime after 11 got to either a lablaws, walmart, homedepot, any big store like that they all have massive parking lots, or any mall for that matter. you can also scout this using google maps

I have a Question tho last year I used to A4 out to parking lots and that thing ripped it up when it came to drifting because of the quattro delivering power to the back, This year tho I bought my own car cause of Uni and such, but heres my question, the car i have now is a 2000 civic, meaning it is pure FWD and I have no idea how that is gonna work with drifting, With the A4 with the TC off the acceleration technique worked like a charm, Is there something different i would have to do with a FWD?

Yes. The only way the over-acceleration technique works is if there's power to the back wheels. In a front wheel drive car, you are required to use only steering to drift (if going forwards). You can always drift backwards though :D

looks like im gonna have to get aquainted with the ebrake and then just use some heal-toe shifting, I'll see how it goes. Haha the reverse thing sounds like fun, lock the e-brake and just do some snownuhts

with fwd you cant start a drift with power, you have to get the car pitched into a corner and use the fwd to pull the car back out of the slide.
you can use a couple different techniques. depending on how your car handles in the snow you can pitch the car under breaking, say its a right hand corner, you turn hard into the corner while braking, which should bring the back around, but depending on the car it might just make the car understeer if you try and turn while braking, so you either have to pitch the car in, then get hard on the brakes, or flick it by turning the opposite way, then into the corner to use the cars weight to "flick" the car into it. this can be done either under braking or before depending on how your car handles in the snow.
with all those techniques you want to carry your braking into the corner. you dont wanna be off the brakes before you even enter the corner, otherwise you will be back on the gas too early and the car will want to straighten out mid corner. so your carrying your braking into the corner till about the apex, with the car sideways and around the apex you get back on the gas through the exit of the corner which in FWD will straighten it out as your exiting the corner. 
or you can use the e-brake,  which is the easiest way to get the car sideways fast. but performance wise i think its only really usefull if  you dont have to slow down much for the corner but you need to get the car into a slide to be able to take the corner fast and/or not understeer.  when you have to do heavy braking into a corner, try and use the brakes not the e-brake unless you really have to.

I know what you mean tho don't give it gas until your front end has made it around the turn and is pointing in the direction you want to go

so kind of like a
 Approach turn
Turn hard into the turn
Tap the break and once you start to loose traction in the back countersteer
Once the front of the car is out of corner pointing in direction you want give it some gas to straighten it out

we got about an inch of snow around where i live last week, and i was out driving all night, just sliding around the corners. No one else was out so it was pretty safe. I just make sure i have some speed when i enter the turn, then i turn the wheel just like i would if it wasn't slippery. Then i pull the e-brake which makes the rear wheels slide out, then i release it and adjust the car so it's pointing the right way. I'm driving my dads mazda 626 stationwagon from 1990, it can really take a beating! it actually drives better than alot of newer cars i've tried driving.

And my neighboor lets me borrow her BMW 320i 2009 whenever i want, and that thing is awesome to drift in! It has some sport/race package setup thing, so it has a bit more power than the regular models.

You should be a little weary about practicing in parking lots. I like doing it myself but often times there are different snow conditions. Many times the parking lots get packed snow and get driven over and will have different traction than a street that has been plowed and compacted over time. Parking lots in my area tend to have softer snow that tends to give you more traction, where corners out on the road seem to be a little more icy.. I learned this the hard way by pulling a 360 off the road around corner recently...

be careful everyone, if you just got your licence and dont know how your car handles in snow make sure you get some mad parking lot hours in before you take it to the street, even with little drifts

one tuesday, TWO of my friends fucked up their cars drifting, and a third almost did too

the first was sliding in a parking lot and the snow was pretty deep so the curb was hidden. he ended up sliding into the curb sideways and his back left tire is now leaning inward at a very significant angle. its a $1500 dollar fix. This is a forester btw, soobs arent invincible

the second was drifting in a different parking lot, lost control of the drift and did the same thing, hitting the curb sideways in his jeep. He cracked both his passenger-side wheels, so they are now leaking air and the car is undrivable and he is gonna have to buy new wheels.

the third, all on the same day, 1) ended up on a lawn after missing a statue by inches and 2) missed the wall of a church by inches

this was all on one day, because these are kids who havent had their license through a winter yet and are super stoked and just go crazy.

that said, i have a manual suby impreza with studs, and that thing is fun as shit to drift in. there is nothing like starting a turn, clutching in, revving, and clutching out and just feeling the back end start going. gotta love it.

does anyone know how much shit you can get in for drifting on church property? I was told you can't get arrested because it's private property but what are the rules for trespassing on a church? It seems like kind of a grey area to me.

i drive a standard impreza too and yes it is real fun to drift in the snow. And i agree a nice clutch kick to a cleanly executed drift is an incredible feeling.
