What the fuckkk - pvc chipping :(

literally the FIRST hit one of our pvc pipes chipped in about a 3/4 or 1/2 inch square area right at the front of it. Then, it cracked right in the middle, where the 10 feet and 5 feet connect.
Now theres about an equally sized chip where they connect, and the rail is unhittable.

Probably a total of 7 hits after 3-4 hours spent on the rail and 3 hours piling up snow to make a drop in after the 2 inch snowfall.

not really sure what I'm trying to accomplish here, but pvc cannot be as strong as you guys make it out to be. I bought it from lowes, it was like 1.5 or 1 inch (whatever is recommended in that tutorial)

The rail was sturdy as hell too and theres no way of removing the pvc without taking the entire thing apart.

it depends on the strength like blue pvc is use in construction because its the strongest and the wider the dimeter the easyer it is to crack

if you plan on replacing the pvc, which you should. buy grey pvc instead of white or black i dunno what you had.

i just got grey, used to use black and grey slides much better, catches less and wont crack. it is for electrical wiring and you should be able to find it in the same places. the only downside is its a bit more expensive but for how much better it is its worth it

It also depends on the thickness of the PVC (not the total size).  You can buy PVC in 1.5" diameter and get it in like many different thicknesses.  Get it nice and thick and it will hold up nice.  The stuff I use takes quite a beating and we even used it in like -7 celsius and there's no chips, cracks, nothing.  The only thing is that one time my noob boarder friend tried a boardslide and didn't jump high enough and took like a square inch off the top but it's no big deal.

also you can use PVC cement to patch it back up if there was just a small weak spot

and i dont know if you meant abs when you said black pvc, but if thats what you meant it has other problems other than just sliding (which can be fixed with wax), for instance it cracks. i hit my summer set up for the first time in the winter a couple days ago and it cracked within a couple of hits... the only thing that sucks is that they come in 12 ft pieces around my place and the electrical pvc comes in ten, so im going to have to do some cutting.... ughh

i find that if you cut it in half then it doesn't have as much stress on the pipe and it wont crack as much. and there is not difference with it being cut in half because it is still round at the top.

Also, depending on the temperature, it may have gotten brittle. But generally, ABS tubing is stronger than PVC. ABS is the black plastic tubing you find at Ace right next to the PVC. It's like PVC but black, so it is stronger. (not actually why)

ABS is brittle in cold weather. i hit my set up that i hit most of the summer (which didnt break in the summer) for the first time in the winter and it cracked within 2 runs

Pretty much all plastics are going to be brittle in cold weather, just some will be less brittle than others. That is why HDPE is used by mountains for their boxes, because it is less brittle than other plastics.

Next time buy PVC from a legit plumbing company, I bought this PVC from them, 20 ft long and 2 in. in diameter.Anyways, I left it in the driveway when I was actually making my rail, and my mom ran it over, it didn't even dent.

make sure it has a solid core, some are filled with yellowish foam between super thin layers of pvc. it'll break right away. also build your rails so that you can take the pvc off cause it does eventually break after years of constant use or if a tree falls on it or something

you can fix the chips with filling it with hot glue and molding it over, put some sand in the hot glue as well

the best way to prevent that is to nip it in the bud. just buy some of those little circular rubber things with the holes in the middle, and just put them over the top of the screw that pokes through the wood. Then when you put the pvc on and fasten it tight, the rubber disperses the impact beween the wooden frame and the pipe - therefore preventing cracks and chips in the pipe. using the industrial grade pvc along with the rubber would probably be ideal. but im using a single piece of the white pvc thats like 2 inches in diameter, and it has held up to the abuses skiing and rollerblading bring for almost a year now.

i just made mine and my friend told me to fill it with expandable foam. Idk the exact name but you can buy it a Home Depot/ Lowes, just ask for it
