GoPro HD editing

Ok so I am new to video, got my brother an HD GoPro for Birthday/Christmas. We filmed some stuff and I put it on my computer, can view the clips in WMP but when I put it into Adobe Premier Pro CS4 it just says its audio because its mp4 format. How do I get it to work so I can edit?

are you importing it correctly?

did you buy your gopro off their website? if so when and how long did it take to ship? (i'm waiting on mine)

did you wait for it to conform or whatever before doing anything to it? bottom right corner should be a loading bar when you import.


its probably not what i just said i have had that problem alot and i never really figured out how to fix it but that worked once.

So I did some research and I think this would be the reason: It's a special kind of MP4 called MP4 H.264. I don't think Premier supports it naturally. Any work around?

You have to transcode it to an intermediate codec such as AspectHD. I'm on a mac so I would use apple prores but I hear AspectHD is good. You can do this in batch.

You can also use quicktime pro to open videos and re-save them as .mov.  My new workflow is using mpeg streamclip (free download).  There you can also cut out the parts of the file you dont need and it takes about 10-15 seconds to comform each clip.  I've been using the apple intermediate codec, then import those files into premiere.

^and when i say premiere i mean FCP, but premiere works as well.

I'm using almost the same workflow except for i'm exporting from streamclip to prores422. The files are slightly larger then using compressor but they are way faster.

When you save as .mov does it lose much if any quality?

i use powerdirector 8. if you are new to video use this kind of software it s super simple, handles all different kinds of videos, and still has a shitload of features (maybe nothing compared to adobe or FC but if you are new to video you wont use them anyway)


i had no problem with my HD 1080p clips. works superwell.
