It's not cheap (There is a 30 day demo though), but ableton live is pretty sick.

if you're just trying to DJ already made songs, futuredecks is pretty sick.

ableton - no its not a DJ program, but it can work like one

He wants Virtual DJ (not preferable for myself), or Traktor from Native Instruments (what I use, but use whatever you like)

You need a MIDI controller to make use of these programs. Or you will be stuck using your keyboard, and frankly its quite hard to do what ya can on a MIDI controller on a keyboard.

I have a Hercules DJ Console RMX. I got it for $239 at Guitar Center, but it retails more commonly for $349. You should go to Guitar Center and look at the controllers available and determine what is best for you. Although you will see your selection is fairly limited to piece of shit plastic junk for $200 price range, and nicer stuff from the $250 price point. The Hercules DJ Console Steel I think, which is like a little more gimped out version of my controller I think is cheaper, but it still comes with the durable construction of the RMX from what I saw.

You will ultimately need a controller with a sound card built in to it because it takes care of all of the routing for what you want to hear.

For instance song A is playing but song B is playing in the headphones and only you hear song B, mixed with song A. This doesn't work out very easy if you are just using a built-in sound card on your notebook or desktop.

you could definitely use ableton. its just hard to get the hang of at first, but ableton is definitly a djing program. Maybe look into the APC40 I just got one and its amazing. Also, I use serato.

If someone seriously wanted to get into DJing learning ableton, although difficult, is a great idea. The program has more features and allows who ever is using it to be more creative than any other program on the market. Also, by using warping in ableton its actual much easier to beat match and mix music than any other program. Plenty of people use Ableton to DJ too, including Deadmau5, Pretty Lights, and Felix Cartal.

every single person here suggesting to use ableton is retarded. don't listen to them, seriously. yeah deadmau5 can use it, but hes also been doing it longer than you.

There is a "sync" or "beatmatch" button in Virtual DJ and Traktor. Its easy to use.

Ableton, you will download it and go what the fuck am I supposed to do?
 
Traktor / Virtual DJ are self explanatory, drag a fuckin track in and hit play.

If you want to just "drag a fuckin track in and hit play" get virtual dj or traktor. If you want to actually learn how to DJ then get a real program like serato or ableton and spend some time with it instead of just doing something that every other person out there could do.

Traktor or Serato

I prefer Traktor because of the FX, loops, beatgrids, cue banks and general layout

and they're both program you can use timecode vinyls with, that's great if you wanna step your game up and start to scratch

if you actually want to learn how to DJ then don't even get a program. go buy some turntables, and get learning how to beatmatch. we'll talk to ya in about 8 months once you get that down.........

ableton doesn't teach you shit about actually DJ'ing.

Serato is really similar to Traktor and Virtual DJ so I have no fuckin clue what the hell he is talking about there.

oh yea serato is really similar in everything but the fact you gotta have two turn tables and like half a grand in hardware.

but its still the same as traktor or virtual dj. drag a fuckin track and hit play.

I use logic but you need to install a Mac OS and its hard to pirate as well. Also I don't know how good it would be for live DJing I was just using it to remix tracks. Its basically garage band without the training wheels.

I use M-audo's Torq and i'm loving it with timecoded vinyls. I started on Virtual DJ with a numark total control and it was great at teaching me the basics. i still use the total control (cousin with the omni and stealth control from numark) because i cant afford pioneer 909 atm. Only drawback to torq is that it is pretty expensive. Tip: dont you the sync button on virtual dj, learn to beatmatch properly it helps a ton.

ableton ≠ djing

serato ≠ traktor or VDJ. VDJ is the shittiest of the shit, traktor is aight, but ugly and has stability problems, and serato, its just a vinyl emulation program.


and beatmatching doesnt take that long to master, I had it down in a few weeks

if you just want to fuck around and play some seamless beats I'd get Traktor with something like Trigger Fingers from M-Audio. Thats where i started messin about with DJing.

this is my problem, it's ok to torrent music and i don't critisize people for movies even though i won't ever, but programs? really, that is just too much IMO. People can do what they want but seriously buy the program, there are fucking teams of people working on every aspect of the program just to see people steal $300 from them.

Ableton, learn to use and love it. Very versatile program, because chances are once you get into DJing you will probably want to produce as well, and bam, you already have a DAW you are familiar with from DJIng. It can be a tad tricky and can seem like a pretty daunting program, but complexity here really isn't a weakness, so why would you go with a more simplistic DJ only program?

sooooo much failure in this thread. srslyfresh, factory81 know whats up though.

if you dont start on tables you cant develop an ear for the beat, beatmatching etc. etc. i use cdj's and a 4 channel because i go through lots of music in a set and i need to have endless tracks. if you dont know what a set is, or what 4 channel means gtfo.

if you wanna be yet another "dj" go download virtual dj. it'll be easy to learn and teach you something at least.

haha, in any case.. i use logic and love it, and do tons of different stuff with it, its a pretty complicated program as far as i know, but i also haven't heard of like half the random bootleg ass programs any one of you guys has named yet..

Serato or torq.

Get either the numark ttusb (turntable) or the tt200. First one's $100 and second one is $200. Let me warn you though, if you really want to get into it you're going to have to buy 2 of these, a nice mixer, and all the vinyl you're going to use. If you just want to scratch over stuff you made on other programs then you only need one but I still recommend a mixer and you still need vinyl.

The tt200's are fine to start out with. You shouldn't go out and by $1200 technics just to see if you even like DJing at all.
