It still was a lot easier than it is today. You had to be real good, but today everybody kills it. Just standing out enough to get sponsored is hard.
It's not quite as nuts as skateboarding though. Even the pros are having to fight off 10 year old kids who can throw all the same tricks. getting pro and staying pro is ridiculous.
But honestly does it matter? If that's your main goal than pick another sport.
It's all about having fun on the hill with friend, maybe learning some new tricks.
The general rule for being a professional at anything is that you need at least 10000 hours of dedicated practise time to it. This means that with skiing, if you averaged 3 hours a day every day of a year, you would get your 10000 hours in about 10 years, a bit less actually. If you're in something to be great at it, you're in it for life. There is no other way.
