Yeah... Its gonna be crazy. I am spending three months in South East Asia though. If you have been there and have any advise let me know.

Southeast Asia is a trip.

Be REALLY careful. While I was doing a volunteering stunt down in Indonesia, my uncle (whom I was with) almost got robbed.

But it's a really amazing experience.

I've been backpacking there for 8 month last year... Trust me you'll be fine, and it's a life changing experience :) .

Just watch for your stuff but in all honesty, I had absolutly no problems during my trips. Asians people are the most open minded, and the nicest I have ever met. So, really, don't be afraid to go talk to them, ask question, introduce yourself and you'll meet some quiet intersting people :) .

For Cambodia, take at least 2 or 3 days to visit Angkor Temples, it's worth your time. Rent a mortbike driver or rent a bike if you're motivated. I really liked Phnom Penh but you'll see by yourself. I've been to all south east asia but it was in Phnom Penh that I got the most harrasment with the kids asking you for stuff or trying to sell you some books or so. It's a bit annoying but just say no and ignore and you'll be fine. If you like to go out, there are plenty of nice bars and club in the capital or in Sihanoukville, but watch out for the hookers.

Eat local too, so many great things to try.. If you take the bus between Siamreap and Phnom Penh, it will stop in between for lunch in a small market bus stop type of thing. BE SURE to try the local specialty: fried tarantulas :D ! There are plenty of them, just buy one, and taste a leg :P .

You could rent a motorbike and travel a bit around, off the tourist trail and get lost, it's the best way to really discover Cambodia, thats what I've done. You'll get some flat tires but don't worry there will always be someone who will help and usually for nothing.

Indonesia (sumatra, java, bali, sulawesi) , Malaysia, Borneo, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and China.

My friend went abroad to Aman, Jordan last year and spent a two week spring break in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. He rented a motorbike and said it was like the best time of his life. He loved Bangkok and Thailand in general so I would recommend that. I'm trying to get there this summer since i'll have two months off after i graduate before flight school.

Bring a metal detector, unless there are those pesky plastic mines that don't get picked up. In that case, bring crutches.

the war ended in 1998 and the only place youre gonna have to worry about mines is up north in thick forested areas near the Thai border and even there you'd be hard pressed to find one.

when will you be going buddy? right now it is the rainy season where Tonle Sap lake has overflown and covered alot of the country up north near Siam Reap. and thats normal. it happens every year. but you should definitely go out and see the floating houses and what not if you go to Angkor. most fishermen out there will double as a sort of tour guide. it ca be sketchy though, so use discretion. keep your money out of sight. theres not necessarily a theft problem but as soon as you pull it out its like a radio beacon.

Dope... My girlfriend and I plan to travel through Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and like I said we will start in Cambodia. We were thinking river travel and a bit by motorcycle and bus. Is transit between major hubs pretty easy?

Safest place in South East Asia is definitely Singapore. And I'm not saying that just because I live there. Everyone's first language is English so there is no language barrier. Its a city nonetheless but a nice stop if you need to get a break and get back to civilisation after travelling through Asia. If you are starting off in Cambodia, I'd definitely say Siem Reap is one of the best historical places. Angkor Wat is definitely worth seeing. My friend went to the Killing Fields, depending on how much you know its where Pol Pot's regime massacred almost 1/2 of their entire population. There's all these skulls and random bullets still there. Pretty eerie but definitely an experience. As for Thailand, all i can say is don't ever go to Phuket,(one of the places hit by the 2003 tsunami) very overrated, swarming with tourists especially a billion Australians and Brits. I'v been to Koh Samui and Hua Hin beaches and its pretty awesome. Downside is its monsoon season right now in South East Asia!

there is no skiing in South East Asia. i would be making a pretty confident guess that most of us that live here moved from areas where we could ski.

I went to cambodia and vietnam over the summer for two weeks. It was a really good expierience overall. Just try new things like foods and talk to the people there. Visit Angkor Wat for sure and the other surrounding temples. Learn some history too while your there and visit the markets in your free time. Siem reap is really touristy with a mix of restaurants. I traveled all around and stayed on an island for some time. But really just be open to new things.
