RED Announcement

Not releasing til may-june for the fixed, but about 5000 for the fixed is pretty legit, good thing its not til may-june... :)

I dont know if the Fixed would be worth it. Its so limiting.

I've given up on following the scarlet.  Once the camera is readily available and footage is out, I'll be interested.  I hope panasonic, sony, canon, or nikon introduce something that is going to give the scarlet a run for its money.  Will it happen? probably not, but I'd love to see Panasonic announce an uncompressed 1080p cam in the form factor of the hpx170 with a choice of lens mounts and an s35 sensor with a price point of $9000.  That'd be amazing, and probably a pipe dream.  Until then, I'm happy with my ridiculously clunky adapter setup.

Hahaha are you kidding?

1. It's completely modular and compatible with all Epic modules so you can build it exactly how you want/need
2. It's got the best features in the business (Resolution, FPS, codec, etc)
3. You can easily upgrade the brain when (if) you outgrow it
4. You will be able to buy high quality wide angel and telephoto adapters made by Red
5. The optics on the fixed are going to be better then most optics you would be using on an interchangeable anyway
6. Pretty much every camera out there today targeted at our segment has a fixed lens (including what you're shooting with) and that doesn't get complained about
7. It's under $5000 which is absolutely unheard of for what it's offering
8. It will hold it's resale value amazingly well so when (if) you upgrade your brain, you will at least have a nice downpayment on a new one.

The lens is only F2.8, which for still photos would be great, but for video, that's pretty weak.  Not only will it affect low light ability, but it will pretty seriously limit DOF control, which is all the rage these days.  I guess it's all speculation until it actually comes out.

Actually the scarlet fixed lens is T2.6 (actual f value should be slightly lower).

But of course you're right about speculation until it comes out. As their motto is everythign is subject to change, count on it and you won't be disappointed.

I am with Alex here, I totally gave up on the whole skarlet thing, and I still think that either sony, canon, or panasonic will come out with something soon that shoots raw and some cool framerates that will compete with RED. But until then I am sticking with my HDSLR. One other thing that people seem to overlook is how RED is still pretty dang pricy stuff, and even though the fixed lens skarlet is under 5k doesnt mean it will be a cheap setup, from my personal experience RED products always need more support equipment than youd expect, not to mention that most of the stuff is unique to red so you have to buy from red. Also, dont forget that you will need a pretty dang mice editing setup to support it too. I dont know, I'm sure these camera's will be rad when they come out in august of 2011 (my estimate), but I am not holding my breath, haha.

agreed with what stone and horner have said. The biggest issue that no one really seems to think about is storage space. That footage has to take up an absurd amount of space.

Yeah, space and not to mention the processing power you have to have to be able to edit/render the raw files.
