How do you remember North, East, South, and West?

i'm one of those people who just does not know directions....and cannot ever learn them. I mean...I can, but not really. I don't know what part of my brain never got the memo, but yeah directions and I don't get along.

So anyway, I use a GPS.

Back to the thread, I used to always just assume that North was whatever direction was straight ahead of me haha

then i remember east as my right hand, west as my left hand, and south as behind me.


As you might assume, many people called me an idiot for that. Rightly so. I am not mentally ill, and I wasn't at that time either, but I can safely say that I still don't know wtf I'm ever doing in terms of directions.

or you could just remember North, South, East, West.

not that hard. try and know what direction is what at all times. that gets a bit harder. North is over my left shoulder at the moment.

The way I do it now is think about the nearest freeway, and if it's even or odd numbered, I can think about my position in relation to it, and figure out north.

Exactly the same here. I'm one of those people who just understand directions without a mnemonic device. I guess I just visualize myself on a map, and can easily figure out which way is north and which is south.

I have trouble anywhere East of the Rockies because it is flat.

the way i learned it, was to just think of the word NOSE, going counter-clockwise
