Yeah i know im on a bit of a thread making binge... but i'll take a break after this one...


I find it amusing how right-wing religious Americans are so vehemently opposed to the concept of helping other people who cant afford healthcare via a public healthcare system... yet they claim to be christian, and one of the most well-known stories in the bible is 'the good Samaritan,' which is all about a dude who went out of his way to give all he could to help someone who he didnt know who was dying on the side of the road.

Now i know people just dont want to be 'forced' to help these people in need... but they really arent going to help them any other way. giving some money to charity is a lot less efficient than having a universal healthcare system that could guarantee care to anyone at any time.
So surely if youre going to claim to be Christian and to follow the stories in the bible, you would be all for universal healthcare...

I'm catholic, and I'm not a huge fan of universal healthcare. And i know you said it in the original post, but the reason I don't like it is because no one should ever be forced to help those who are less fortunate, if they don't want to. Also, it's not like this bill is only going to affect christians. If a christian wants to be a good samaritan, then he/she can do that under his own will.

for the question, idk why it seems like they would wanna follow the "rules" as being a good Samaritan is a pretty fucking huge part of being a christian.

Christians ignoring parts of the Bible that they don't like? Never seen that before. (sarcasm)

It seems like most people who claim to be "Christian" or religious (in whatever capacity) emphasize the parts of whatever doctrine that are convenient for them, while leaving out parts that don't support their beliefs.

This is just another example - sure, the "good Samaritan" story sounds nice, but if it doesn't support right-wing beliefs, they'll just ignore it. If you look, you can find tons of other instances of this.

Don't get me wrong though, liberals do it as much as conservatives. Basic politics.

And lol, laced weed.

as i said in my post, its a lot easier to help everyone when you have an organized system of public healthcare rather than just helping a few people nearby.

Jesus would think youre a cunt if you didnt want public healthcare.

being religious has nothing to do with universal healthcare. universal healthcare will just be there to help the people with no money that don't want to work for a living. they expect everything without having to work for it. the story of the good samaritan relates in no way to healthcare. helping  a random dude out compared to being forced to pay taxes so lazy people can go to the hospital for free? you're right it is the same!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think what it comes down to them thinking like the conservatives do: limit the power of the government and focus on big business. They are keeping their religious view out of it (which is good, religion has NO place in politics or education) even though the religious side is saying to create healthcare for everyone. I'm sure their morals are out of whack too, and they really have no problem with denying people help, but that's their issue.

fucking hell dude, how much can you buy into the 'american dream.'

Just imagine if you were born to a 16 year old crackhead mother in compton... im pretty sure there would be a lot more than being lazy that would stand between you and good healthcare.

Christianity agrees with true capitalism. in a true capitalistic society without health universal health care, it would be your fault that you do not have health care, because you did not work for it. universal health care would only help out those who do not deserve to be helped and hurt those who were all ready fine.

this is what a catholic priest has personally told me. this is not my opinion.

except there is no such thing as a purely capitalistic society... so the entire argument is invalid.

in order for universal healthcare to be not needed, you would need to live in society where there is no prejudice, absolute freedom, and complete fairness, where no people have an inherent advantage over anyone else. such a society does not exist... especially not in the US.

'd be fine with universal healthcare IF there were a way to prove the person receiving it was not lazy and a responsible human being.  In my mind the following two things would need to happen AT A MINIMUM:

1.  Prove that you aren't lazy, that you also CONTRIBUTE to the same system you take advantage of.  Show that you are employed a minimum 40 hours a week to take full benefits.  Don't have a job and can't get one?  Show PROOF that you have been at least trying.  Fuck, work at McDonalds for minimum wage if it comes down to it.

2.  Drug testing.  Any person receiving healthcare would have to take a drug test at the time of treatment and be subject to random testing the following two years.  if the recipient is a minor, both the kid and the guardian must take the same tests.  No healthcare if the kid fails, let the parents show them how dissappointed they are.  The guardian fails, take the kid away from them. 

Show me you are responsible and not lazy, I'll contribute to your health bills.  Otherwise, fuck you.

ill shovel this on. according to my college level sociology book. (just left of the writings of Marx;)

54% of heads of housholds that were classified as poor. did not work AT ALL in 2006. and an additional 28% only worked part time.

whatever their reason for working, over half of poor people did NOT work. (head of household)

these stats are from 2007 government info. and the actual numbers come from 2006.

in 2006 unemployment was less than half of what it currently is. 4.something%. it rests now at just over 10%.


if those were the numbers then, i would wager the numbers are MUCH higher now. however we'll have to see the numbers in sociology books in 3 or so years.

I know you didn't say this, but... wow. This thread brings up too many things for me not to make multiple replies. Again, ignorance. With every kind of thing like this that I read, I get more and more disgusted with religion. That doesn't even make sense.
