Replying to Camcorder Noob- help meee

Going to ask for a cam for christmas- i want high def for sure and would like it to have an internal harddrive.

SO 2 things- internal hard drives are fine right? wont freeze or anything,

and also im looking for one that around 500$, so what brands and models would you suggest- specific models would be huge help!
