Physics People: The Physics of Skiing

I have a major project for Physics 11 at the end of the year, me and a friend are doing a joint project on the physics of skiing. But since he doesn't allow group projects he made an exception for us, we have to do multiple times the word. So we decided to cover all types of skiing, from carving and basics, to jumps (tabletops) and halfpipe. Keep in mind when you explain this stuff, i'm in physics 11, which deals with motion and etc travelling in straight lines and so forth, so that i may not understand it right away. Help is appreciated, we need to get a head start.

if you guys still have snow you could tape some stuff like hitting tables. You could even figure out the Force of Friction on the skis when sliding a rail. The only problem is making sure you're measuring in meters.

When you carve you lean into the turn, but somehow you don't fall over. Magic? No my friend, physics. I think we learned about centrifugal forces in grade 13 physics though... and you probably think I'm fucked for being in grade 13, so yeah. I need a shower.

lol, describing the physics of skiing with the knowledge gained from what i am supposing is basically an intro physics course. Good luck, i hope you know alot of calculus and can measure speeds, angles and friction really well. Did i mention calculus? cuz you are gonna have way too much shit for algebra

yeah i was going to say you should stay away from the carving because you will get into the centrifugal forces, and you would never have enough info for that. stick to the trajectory off jumps and friction and different forces on different slopes. also, with the halfpipe, you will again have too many variables.

my physics teacher told me to bring in 1242 and forward to watch in physics class to watch physics in action or some shit like that tomorrow..........can anyone explain to me the principles of inertia and superposition, i have no idea how to write an essay on that shit

inertia is an object in motion stays in motion right? the law of superposition in earth science was just layers of of under each other and cross cutting layers and shit..i doubt thats what theyre talkin about

find the coefficent of friction between your ski and the snow, the draw like a diagram of a table and show how high you would need to start to clear it, and take pop into account

eh. that all sounds good, but try to LIMIT your variables and INCREASE the number of times you repeat the experiment...much more reliable data that will impress the teacher.

almost finished with college, will be a physics teacher. how much do you pay me to do a professional job? :)
'can you read what that says?'
'donna simma?'
'yes, that's right. now how would that appear in a phone book?'
'simma, donna?'
'that's right now Simma down na!

I more than understand the difficulty of it all, but hey i need to learn and i want to do this. Plus i agree there are things i need to stay away from in the project.

theres no such thing as centrifugal force. you mean centripital force.

if you know of any ways to digitalize a print out (or a fax that you can receive a fairly large doc), I have an article on the Physics and Biomechanics of Skiing (I'd have to dig it up) and another article called Skiing: The Nuts and Bolts (by Ron LeMaster, 1995) that dleves into the mechanics of skiing and center of mass vs center of gravity, and Centrifugal Force and Accellerating out of turns and what not.
Message me if you want a copy and what the easiest way to get a copy is (if there is time before your paper is due).

i did a little project in trig last year and I used an equation to tell how far you'd go off a jump. it was kinda neat.
