Have $$ to donate, Recommend a Charity

Hey so I started this system where I started putting money away every month to donate. Don't ask me why, but its just something I do. I have 500+ dollars that I want to donate to a Charity.

What are some good charities that are currently accepting donations? What are their causes?
Might be a long shot, but any notable skiing related charities out there? Something like helping veterans or Children get to ski?

From what I recall, the Salvation Army is one of the most legitimate charities out there. They top the charts as far as utilizing the money given. Its around 13% kept for their costs (utility bills, property taxes, etc.) and 87% is put to use. Many Salvos further utilize the contributions to run a goodwill/thrift store to make more money to give.They feed, house and support the poor, homeless and disaster victims. The head man of SA makes under 15k a year.

I appreciate your generosity and  the Make-A-Wish is a great cause. I just recommend to anyone giving to a charity to ask what percentage is actually given to the cause. When asked, I have gotten some ridiculous numbers in the 12-40% range. I will support the ones who truly do care, like the salvo.

I agree find out if there is an adaptive skiing program at your mountain and donate to it. I volunteer for the Waterville Valley Adaptive Snowsports program and it's incredibly rewarding to see the smile on a child's face after they've been skiing all day. plus any money you give will go straight into buying better equipment that will improve their experience.

not kids on africa please, try and do somthing local like kids maybe in yourtown area that dont have warm clothes, wont have presents for christmas etc.

You should "sponsor one of those kids from the commercials, that way you can see the direct influence you're having which is cool.

the problem with ski related charities is that skiing itself is already so expensive, $500 wouldn't be able to cover airfares, rentals, lift tickets, etc. to pay for people who want to go. local is the way to go whether it is salvation army (which i donate excessively to), a homeless shelter, soup kitchen or just taking 3 random hobos on a drinking binge for a friday night

back in highschool we had to collect money to help find a cure for cancer. our homeroom teacher told us that if we lost the sheet and didnt give it back wed have to pay 5 $. so i gave it back and told him that they already had enough money an everyone just thought i was a terrible person. and to the OP i think what youre doing is awesome.

Generally soup kitchens are legit. Probably a more "normal" denomination has a soup kitchen near you. I'm not really christian but I am interested in helping out at a soup kitchen.

Maybe donate it to make a wish, or something to help poor people over seas. There are a lot of great charities but if I were choosing I would choose something for people who really need help.

Actually, I am in touch with the woman who started Kiva, she went to my Highschool and I'm in the Kiva club at my school

THANK YOU EVERYONE BUT I DONATED 80 PERCENT TO MAKE A WISH FOUNDATION AND THE REST TO SAN JOSE FAMILY SHELTER

i guess feel free to keep suggesting more charities for My radar or anyone else

i didn't say there wasn't.

 if he really wanted to make a difference he wouldn't just write a check and donate it all to an organization where a majority of it will go to administration of the organization or whatnot.

If you're still to donate your money, I would recommend you take a look at the organisation called CRARN. I saw a british documentary about how a lunatic sub-movement of the christian church in a part of Nigeria convinces parents that their children are possed by evil spirits, and are responsible for the tragedies of the family and tribe environment, which leads to parents comitting unbearable and ubelieveable pain to their own children in order to save them from evil spirits that doesn't exist.

One kid had a nail hammered down through her skull so she almost died, and another kid was hold in chains for five years without seeing daylight, and had lost his mind.  Others were just simply where beat to dead by their own family. Donate to CRARN and support them in saving helpless children from in-human abuse and to fight the ignorance of the nigerian society and the church movement. 

Child's Right and Rehabilitation Network (CRARN)
Organisation with a firm belief in, and intent on, safeguarding the rights of a child including the issues of child abandonment, street children and stigmatization as witches and wizards.

The documentary is called "saving africa's with children " if anyone is interested.

yuck, I didn't read your post thorough. Nice choice of organisations, props.

and the documentary was named witch children, not with children, if the documentary is in anyone's interest.
