Pixel count is practically an arbitrary number nowadays.  It may be "HD" but you get what you pay for.

Go on craigslist and pick up a miniDV camera made by sony, canon, or panasonic.  Sony's TRV series such as the TRV900, and TRV20 are great.  Canon's Elura and optura lineup (Elura100, ect) are dec, and Panasonic GS320 or GS500 are great as well.  These are all Standard def minidv cameras.  HD below the Canon HV20/30/40 series, is for the most part pretty shitty.

I work with a HF200 and its pretty good/ plus the convience of thumbnail playback is nice

Sanyo FH1 for  $404 shipped on ebay. If you can get to that level it's a very good camera.
