Replying to Thoughts on the orange name
Hello all, I haven’t made many posts in a while. Posting isn’t something that happens when you have an orange name.
My industry saga started when I was a senior in high school and went to the Poor Boyz Jib Jam. Since then I’ve kept in touch with PBP going to IF3, some tour dates, and the Ski Bowl photo shoot amongst others as well. During the Park city stop for Every Day Is A Saturday, a bet was made in the 7-11 parking lot. I was pissed at Cody (I’m not going into this), who is mutual friends with Schmuck.
Six months earlier, Cody asked me why I didn’t have an orange name, I was friends with pros and guarded many secrets that would make ski gabber buzz for days. It was because didn’t think it was appropriate for me to ask for the orange name. I think Cody said he’d ask or maybe I just asked him to.
So flash foreword to the 7-11 in park city, Cody asked me if there was ever a time when he didn’t do something he promised me or let me down. I brought up the orange name.
At that time the orange name was illusive. It was something I could not obtain and something that only special people had. Considering my credentials I thought I was worthy and more worthy than more than a handful of other orange names. These orange names include those who I don’t think are industry enough of use there names unprofessionally.
After the bet was made, I Pm’d Schmuck to tell him the parameters. I fucked up the wording of the bet and ended up with the orange name and a confused Schmuck after I told him I made a crucial error in the way it worded the bet to him. I don’t even remember what the proper wording of the bet was but I now had an Orange name. The bet involved $500 dollars but the money was irrelevant.
I had an orange name and I was stoked. I felt like part of the elite. My industry yielding credentials now has meaning. My posts all of the sudden had more validity than before. Other people could see by looking at my name that I was a kind of a big deal.
I don’t think I’ve made for than 10 posts in the last month and a half. Every post had to be serious or in the sarcastic but in the right context. My personal belief is that an orange name is to show the professionals of the industry. We are all showmen and love to show off. Orange named posts should are to give profound valid information about the industry or to create jokes that everyone can get behind and enjoy like Alex Martini’s “Wallisch should quit skiing†thread. Having an orange name is kind of bland. No hating on the idiotic posts allowed. The orange name was invented to add legitimacy to many posts. Take Tanner as an example, everyone knows who he is when he creates a thread and that post becomes a gospel. It is good that our sport has such an easy connection between the face of it and everyone that enjoys it.
I don’t think it is that cool that some orange names still roam NSG or rack up 50+ posts a week No one is capable or wants to make 50 posts valid to the industry in a week. Take Dan Brown as an example, when making the industry related posts he turns to his orange name and when he wants to dick around or comment on things that aren’t relevant to his orange name status he turns to his blue name. I think that is brilliant. It is hard to mix business with pleasure on NS because every high profile member of NS has an image that they maintain. High profile names don’t have to be orange. For example, TWA, eheath, and Nomensteven are all blue. These are names that all NS members should know. I don’t always agree with these members, in fact, I usually don’t like eheath or TWA. One of those people would be deservant of an orange name if 95+% of his posts weren’t pure douchebaggery. Because of this he shouldn’t have one.
Now that I don’t have the orange name anymore I feel free, I have already started commenting on how fucking dumb some of the posts are and enter NSG with the intent of whoring up my post count. In all honestly, I wanted to be a blue name again but never would have asked for it just to take NS a little less seriously. NS was boring as an orange name. I felt so disconnected when I couldn’t post. That being said, I do miss the orange name and liked the eliteness of when I had it.
Comments, concerns, questions, bashing, constructed criticism? I want to hear what you guys think.
Ps. Another thing that really didn’t fit into the story, one thing I really hate is when posts are made saying either, “why do you have an orange name†or “get him an orange name.â€
