Why weren't these invented decades or centuries ago?

Eyeglasses that use water as a lense. Apparently they are super cheap to produce so they could easily be distributed to all the poor people with bad vision. It took a physics professor at oxford to invent these, I think the principles of water magnifying things were discovered hundreds if not thousands of years ago. Kudos to him for finally making them though.

lol, you would use a machine to make it fill it all the way with no air bubbles or anything, then you wouldnt even be able to tell if it was moving...

it doesn't matter how cheap they are to produce, widespread use will never happen.  People wont pay to feed these people so i doubt that they are going to be able to fund their eyeware

yes, the water is going to evaporate through the plastic. when did ns become so stupid? Its in a closed container so the water isn't going anywhere. This is actually a really good invention, simple is always better.

so you're serious, you can't figure out that it's so much easier to simply use water, as is, for it's power of magnification rather than finding sand, heating it to ridiculous temperatures, forming glass, then needing to cut, grind, and polish said glass in to an optical lens, that will be good for only one magnification.

1:1,000,000 optometrists to people in Africa. The water glasses can change prescription based on how much water is in them, allowing the wearer to say when it's good, and then just tighten the screw and move on. They don't need a huge test or procedure by a professional to be able to see. That was the point. Cheap, easy eyewear.

this invention is so inovative and usufull and can i say it is CHEAP

just think that now you guys who wear those expensive optics wont have to pay 600 dolors and go through certain tests just to get two pieces of fragile glass on a crappy frame to help with ur vision

now, all u need is jsut some water :))

I think if you're working in Alberta you have plenty of that oil money to buy a pair of prescription glasses, not to mention a couple ATV's, sleds, and a nice big truck to top it off.

i think a lot of people are missing the point. it says in the article that these are not intended for normal middle class people in developed nations. more so for less fortunate people in developing nations.

hahahaha. just giving the frame and an empty lens to a million people won't help much. you need the proper prescription to help the person see, which isn't even the opticians job. sometimes having too much power or not enough is worse than not wearing any glasses. also african-americans have higher risks of glaucoma, cataracts and astigmatism so a little water lens wouldn't do anything for them. good idea, but it won't work.
