If i get good grades this semester my mom will let me get a car in a reasonable budget to last the rest of college, I really really want the Cayenne S, 2004 with like 40k miles, black with navigation and rims. It's such a sick deal! however, my dad claims that the upkeep is going to become really expensive, is this true? I don't want to end up paying thousands for maintenance every year and piss my mom off

just because you can afford something doesn't mean that you should pay for it. School is already 50k and parents work hard for their money, it's good to save them some when you can.

I'm 17 and I have a 2002 Honda Accord from my aunt with about 100,000 miles on it. And you want a 2004 porsche cayenne? Wowawiewa. My car gets from A to B and its GREAT. I love my car. It's not flashy but I got myself a nice sound system and it works just fine. It was about $3000 from my aunt.

If you really want to save your parents some money, get a jetta or something.

Oh and you're probably a troll. If so, there's the reaction you're hunting for. If not, then there's your advice.

well said.  i love cars that i can beat up and not worry about. somebody dented the fuck out of the tailgate on my f150. months before that i fucked up the front bumper. all dmamges costed under 500 to fix. i really couldnt give a shit. shooping carts, other people's doors, harsh winters and ice, you're not as worried when it gets all banged up. body work on a porshe? thousands. ins wont cover scratches and damage from the mtn throwin skis in it.

im not sure about the cayenne S' but we had a turbo and it was always at the shop getting something fixed, they are amazing cars but very finicky. and dont even bother looking for a range rover unless you have extended warranty.

if you want a luxury SUV why not looking into a newer used escalade, i know for a fact you can get a used 2007 escalade for around 30K and it will be a better SUV in terms of reliability than the cayenne. i have had all of these in my possession at one point in time, and reliability wise the escalade never had a problem. the range rovers and porches were always in for maintenance

Porche's and other imported cars are generally more expensive for upkeep than traditional American or Japanese cars.  If not even for the upkeep you have to really look at insurance rates as well. Someone in college, with a Porsche, that's generally not going to be cheap. If you want an SUV you're better off looking for a more affordable one and using the left over $$ that they would've spent or you would've spent and put that away for any maintenance or repair work you may incur in the future.

To answer your question, maintaining a car like that will cost a lot more than an american or japanese car. Most newer porsches, bmws, mercedes etc are designed so that the average joe mechanic can't change the oil or perform other basic maintenance. They design them in ways so that you have to bring them to a porsche dealer or to a specialized european auto shop so then they can charge more because you can only take it to them.
