Breck skier killed.

So ski season is pretty much here for a lot of us, if not, it's right around the corner. Just be safe out there and be smart about where and how you are skiing. RIP Haley Rose Gans. Be safe out there guys.


BRECKENRIDGE - A 14-year-old girl died Friday after skiing into a tree at Breckenridge Ski Resort.

The girl was identified by the Summit County Coroner as Haley Rose Gans from Colorado Springs. The coroner says she was home schooled.

The resort says the incident happened at 11:48 a.m. on the blue intermediate trail Spruce. The resort's ski patrol responded immediately and worked with Flight for Life to put the girl on advanced life support while getting her to the ambulance.

According to the Summit County Coroner, Witnesses say she was skiing very fast and ran into a tree. Her death was related to a blunt force trauma to the chest.

"Breckenridge Ski Resort, Breckenridge Ski Patrol and the Vail Resorts family extend their deepest sympathy and support to the family and friends of the young woman," a release from the resort said.

The girl was pronounced dead at the Breckenridge Medical Center after being flown by Flight for Life to an ambulance which rushed her to the hospital.

always sucks to have someone die on the hill. a few years back, a ski patrol saw a kid heading for a steep ravine and pushed him away right at the last second but ended up going down said ravine and hitting his head on a sharp rock. sucks.

Well a helmet wouldn't exactly protect you from blunt force trauma to the chest but it is a good idea.

Very sad to hear a story like this.  Hard to imagine somebody actually dying skiing inbounds on a blue run.  Just one of those rare occasions I guess.  Hopefully it doesn't turn into some big thing where parents want ski hills with trees shut down or something

It happened on a run where there were some pretty gnarly rollers. Apparently she went pretty big off one of them and double ejected on the landing and flew into the trees on the side of the run. My roommates were saying breck was pretty icey today also so that probably didn't help.

my best friends dad passed away skiing last year. its terrible but atleast they were doing something as amazing as skiing

RIP for the little girl, but I'd be willing to be most ski area deaths are from flat landers taking trees to the face. You hear about these all year long, youth groups from Oklahoma, celebrities. Lets just hope it doesn't lead to more regulation on the hill.

Haha. Well obviously, I was saying that trees are commonly forgotten about by skiers and can really damage. Trees are the only reason for me wearing a helmet in pow.

This situation reminds me of a guy who died at my resort like a year or two ago. The guy was an expert skier and an even better mountain biker. He fell on a basically flat green run at the bottom of the mountain going maybe 5mph and died. They think he had crashed mountain biking and that had tweaked his back just right so that this crash was just enough force to kill him, even though it's something you would laugh and get right up from. Sad. RIP and vibes going out to her family and friends.

This just sucks.  I have a daughter, and for her dad, his worst nightmares just became reality.  My heart breaks for that family. 

Static, the majority of fatalities that happen early season are primarily locals.  The tourists haven't started getting here yet.  This girl was from the Springs, so I wouldn't really classify her as a flatlander. 

Early season in Colorado is the time where we all get a taste of what it's like to ski East Coast conditions.  The problem is that Rocky Mountain skiers aren't used to it and often aren't prepared.  We hit the slopes and ski man made teflon conditions with dull edges.   Everyone's pumped for the season and with limited terrain opened, we get our thrills by skiing fast.  We're lucky it doesn't happen more often.

Really smart move by resorts to be putting out more jib features earlier.  Vail actually has some rails set up on Bornfree.  Can't remember them ever doing that before, but that gets at least some people to slow down.  The nickname for Bornfree early season is "the ribbon of death".

Last year like three youngsters were killed by hitting trees at a ski hill close to me on blue and green ontario runs which are pretty flat. They just lose control and can't stop.

Nothing to do with helmets whatsoever, so not really sure why you felt the urge to bring that up.

I just cant decide about helmets or no helmets. I wanna try skiing pow with no helmet, but worry about the trees and other stuff. What do you guys do? No helmets in park?

RIP. these things are terrible and i cant imagine what it would be if i was directly affected. But if it was me who hit that tree, I wouldnt want to keep peoples spirits down, but live on in memory and shred that much harder and have the most fun possible.

let this be a lesson to all, learn how to turn/stop before going on blue runs. theres a girl at my school who almost died from the same thing. she got away lucky though with only broken ribs, a broken arm, a lacerated kidney, a collapsed lung, and a couple other stuff that i forgot. RIP to the girl though.
