This is about Thierry Henry's controversial handball in the world cup qualifier against Ireland.

For all those that don't know, the ball skipped off of McShanes foot and from the video we see that Henry deliberatly played the ball with his hand to his foot, to the middle for an assist for tie goal to send them to the world cup based on goals.

Being a soccer player myself, i don't think there is any wrong here.  Before any of you hate, the fact i really enjoy professional soccer over most other sports is the fact that there is no instant replay, arguing calls, and overturning anything you don't like.  This, in my opinion, is the referees fault and as stated by Henry himself "the referee missed the call and that was his fault."

There were many challenges to replay the qualifiing game becaues of the missed call that has now been caught by multiple camera angles however FIFA has overuled these areguments which i completely support.  If soccer came down to instant replay bullshit i don't think i will ever enjoy watching it anymore.

it is so gay, they should either have Ireland advance or have a replay of the game. FIFA come on, the refs fucked up, costing Ireland the game and you're not going to do anything. fucking bullshit

Years ago, two teams (can't remember which) replayed their game but not because of a missed call, but a miss-application of the rules by the ref.  I agree with you, no replays, the call should stand.  It's all the refs fault.  If he ever goes to Ireland, he's gonna get assassinated...

The final draw this year was fucking bullshit anyway. Fifa obviously wanted the big name teams and not small upcomers like Ireland and Bosnia. They seeded the draw just to make it harder, and there was a bit of interesting calls for the big teams during the games. I really hate Fifa sometimes.

yea, fifa does suck. I love platini, but he should be managing a team rather than being on the business end of things.

and while it may be bullshit to get through like this, it's done. No replays, no nothing. What people seem to forget is that the irish weren't winning. They were tied. They were by no means robbed of their world cup spot, since as of that point, they didn't have one. It could have easily been disallowed, then gone to penalties, and the French could have just as easily won it, and probably would have. So no, the irish didn't deserve anything more than the French. If nothing else, they deserve less for failing to take advantage of their countless opportunities against a struggling french side. The world cup isn't for teams who deserve to get there, it's for teams that DO get there.

And no replay can be done because then the referees job is ruined. Any team in any match that doesn't do well because of a poor ref will demand a replay, and calls won't matter anymore. If we replay this match, then let's replay chelsea vs barcelona last spring, or France vs. Germany from 1982, France vs italy in 2006 since the ref gave a card based on a TV replay,  or England vs Argentina from 1986. The refs will be useless, because well, if it doesn't go your way, just complain about the ref, and get the game played over. it's one of fifa's laws of the game that referee decisions are not overturned after the match has ended.

i mean if you were on his team you wouldnt but looking at it form the irish side, they were robbed
it was a deliberate hand ball in the box and it caused the goal that kicked the irish out of the world cut
they should use video replay more often to prove it
goal should not have counted

Everyone is talking about that in France and most of people are pretty ashamed that France get into the Wolrd Cup thanks to this handball..

When the thing happened, it was so huge on Facebook and Twitter, everyone was talking about that, arguing or making fun of Thierry Henry, who by the way apologize on his facebook.

This is pretty lame...

While it sucks for Ireland they had to get ousted like that I love that this game isn't replayed.

This is gonna be remembered as a controversial decision but over time the wounds are going to heal. Futbol just wouldn't be the same with instant replays.

and what i ws getting at saying i didn't see anything wrong was meant as i would have done the same thing.  In soccer/futbol you do things like this in anticipation the referee won't see it.  It's alll  part of the game.

It would be bullshit if they atarted using instant reeplay for things like this but there never will be instatn replay in FIFA

think about it though if henry didn't put that ball back in the box or the header went over the bar, you know how many people would care? none

i've played soccer my entire life. i think that if a replay system was installed it would benefit the game.

hear me out, i don't want replay to take over the game, so i would say you could only replay when the outcome of the play was changed by a possible foul. (i.e. france v ireland.)

offsides is non reviewable, open play fouls are non reviewable. the only thing reviewable is a foul on a play that effects the direct outcome of the game

i would also say that the only way to replay is not by challenge, but by the decision of the 4th official. say 1 replay a game max since after all, the ref usually makes but one mistake. (that would change the out come of the game)

i can understand what you are saying with only allowing replays on plays like this one.  Whati don't want to happen is it become the american football system where no matter the call, either coach bitches and challenges the call.

I just think no replays is part of the game along with referees missing certain calls where like i said before, players try to do sometimes (myself included)

either way for the time being, shit happens

im kind of a france supporter, not die-hard or anything, but i cheer for them during the major international tournaments. im kinda rattled that the only reason france was able to qualify was this hand ball. i wouldve rather seen ireland qualify than this shit. but then again, thats currently one of the flaws of soccer and theres nothing we can do about it. and when you think about it, france qualified but theyre not going to go far let alone win the tournament, and lets not kid ourselves, ireland wouldnt be able to do much better if they had qualified instead, so does it really matter whether it was a hand ball or not? thats the way i look at it anyway

Even the french papers said the the irish were robbed.

Henry is my favourite player, he is one of the best footballers in the world. Why he played the ball with his hand, ill never know. I agree though it shouldnt be replayed. If we resorted to replays a lot of stuff would get turned around. IE: England's Rooney Red Card in the portugal game.

It sucks, but shit happens.

i've been watching ESPN a lot today and during an interview Henry even said he "handled the ball" out of a slit second reaction.  The referees just missed the call

As a German, I fell like we've got a real good shot. We were in a real tough group and won it without losing a match. I feel like South Africa is a very good place for us to play. Right now, I'd say Spain and Brazil are above us, and Netherlands and England are right on par with us. I'd put my money that one of these five teams win. Good thing is, England always fucks up and I fell like Brazil doesn't play well enough as a team. Plus, I'll be studying in Berlin during the WC next summer, should be a blast!

soccer isn't lame american football where they stop time and review every flag and foul and give the players time to rest. there are always bad calls. this certainly was one, but it was the ref's call.

Can we please stop with the soccer threads? There's probably only two or three people on all of NS with any knowledge of the game, one of them being myself.

You guys are fucking mental if you think replays would harm the game of footy. Please just give me one legitimate reason why it would. What's ruining football is cheaters and crooked executives/officials.

Henry is and always has been a dirty cheating twat. He should be hung. I can't wait to watch France get properly fucking cunted next summer, they are such a despicable team.Hopefully they end up in a group with England, Algeria and the USA. They'll finish with zero points, zero goals and 10 000 goals against. Then all the gay French will have a massive fucking cry (especially considering who they'll have just lost to) and hopefully set fire to their own country.

i'm not even sure if you have any knowledge of the game. can you imagine how long games would take if they started to replay anytime a player takes a fall or whatever? and if france is so bad then how do they usually do so well in the world cup. really?

i can't wait til next year when rooney, gerrard, lampard and terry all dive all they want and beg for penalties, yet england fail once again. You seem to be forgetting that england's only major trophy was won under questionable reffing. Not the first, or last time it'll happen in football.

though i do agree that tv replays would benefit everyone in the end.

How has France done so well in the World Cup? Dude, up until 1998 they had only made it to the semi finals a single time, hardly the mark of a traditional powerhouse. Then, in 2002, they didn't even make it out of the group stage and didn't score a single goal. Besides, Zidane basically carried the national team for a whole decade. If you have seen France play ever since Domenech took over you would understand how horrible this team really is.

I'm a fan of the french squad and have been playing soccer for a while. My take on the whole thing is that there is no way they can call for the game to be replayed. Bad calls happen all the time in soccer and in this case it happened to come at a very bad time for Ireland. However, there is no way that FIFA will allow the game to be replayed so suk it up Ireland, we're just as ashamed as you are angry.

You seem to be forgetting that Terry, Lampard, Gerrard and Rooney are all world beaters. France has been reduced to an uncoordinated group of has beens and young players. You also seem to be forgetting that England is managed by a master Italian tactician while France is managed by a loopy French cunt who's head is up in the clouds (literally).

And sure Henry WAS a great player. Doesn't change the fact that he's past it. He's also a product of the Arsenal/Wenger cheating machine.

It HAS been done before. FIFA just wanted France in there over Ireland, just like how UEFA wanted Barca to win the CL instead of Chelsea. Why do you think they decided to seed the playoffs? How could you explain the two muppet officials missing two blatant offsides and that handball?
