Skiing with a knee brace

I know the argument, i dont really care, im gonna use one for a while regardless. Anyways what kind of braces have you guys been rockin?

i used a thumb brace thingy 2 years ago. do knee braces prevent movement at all? i might get some just in case haha

I hope they do^ so i guess if you ski with a brace then you can never go back to skiing without one, i don't know where i heard that but i'm hoping its BS. Got a weak MCL and i'm gonna ski groomers for a few weeks but some extra support would be nice. Anyone have any experiance with don joy braces?

A brace will definetly help for mcl, I dunno where you heard once you start skiing with it you cant ever stop using it, There are exercises you can do to strengthen all the stabilizing muscles around your knee.

Anyone have any experience with the ossur cti off the shelf brace?

You should only wear a brace if you really have to. If you do you have to make sure you do excercises often to strengthen the knee or else you will have to wear it forever, i know a guy who hasnt been able to participate in gym class the last 7 years because hehas been wearing a brace without bothering to train but now he started training his knee and its getting alot better :)

I fucked up my knee last thursday. Thought I fucked my MCL but after a few xrays I found out it's gonna be fine in a few weeks. Been taking it easy but I started skiing with an OTC knee brace. Definitely helps having the extra support. Only ski with one if you're having pain/swelling, and make sure you stretch A LOT. You need to do your own rehab on your knee, otherwise you'll get dependent on the brace.

I tweaked my knee pretty bad last year and I borrowed a don joy brace from a friend. they are really really nice but it was custom measured to fit him and he is a bit bigger than me so it didn't fit perfect.

i have a bad MCL that flares up now and then, so i keep one of the neoprene sleeve ones on hand just in case. for me the biggest thing it does is keep my knee warm all day and better blood flow = less pain.

sprained my mcl and used a neoprene donjoy with bars on the side for a couple months. worked great.

I just wear the neoprene knee sleeves. they're cheap and don't limit what you can do. They really just keep my knees from hurting from getting cold or whatever. really all you need if you havent had a serious knee injury. otherwise serious knee braces are a waste of money

after my third season ending knee injury i decided to get some knee braces. I have two custom don joys and they're decently comfortable, they come with knee insurance. I don't think i would ski without them at this point. So, yeah they are kind of a pain in the ass, but better than surgery

I rock an asterisk cell brace on my knee i injured a few years back, i would rock them on both knees but I'm poor.  maybe  I'll get myself another for christmas.

I really like it, i wouldn't say it adds confidence, but i do enjoy the feeling of a little extra support.  only problem I often have trouble keeping it from sliding down, any tips?

Like previously stated, only wear a brace if you really need it. Knees muscle tendons etc are used to the daily wear and tear that we put upon them, and are strong as such. When you wear a knee brace it is like artificially grafting additional muscle and bone that can be removed. When removing the knee brace your knees become much more unstable due to the fact that its normal stability has been removed. Just make sure to do a lot of knee workouts and you should be fine.

i wore the custom don joy brace after my first acl blow out, then blew it out again with the brace on, im brace free now, knees are always going to hurt after you fuck em up once, just have to train your balls to create morphine

Wore it all through soccer season, and now through ski season. I would, but again, it's your call. You would really be kicking yourself if you hurt it more and were out for the WHOLE season... But, just my opinion. I don't think they are that uncomfortable, custom fit, and as you gain muscle they fit even better. If you can afford it/if insurance covers that shit, go for it! It's all preventative.

I ruptured my ACL a couple years back. I've used a knee brace on and off ever since then. It all depends on how I feel that day. I've got three braces too, one that has side supports and a circle to hold the knee cap in place, one that is just a strap with a piece of rubber that tightens up the patellar tendon, and another that is a more lightweight version of the first one (with less support.)

Best one for me the majority of the time is the strap because I feel it the least. Also, if you're strapped for cash you can make your own using athletic tape and anything hard to press up against the patellar tendon.
