WORST SHOP CLASS EVER

Today in shop class was probably one of the worst days of my life. This kid was using the jointer machine, for those who dont know what that is its the long table with a spinning saw blade in the middle of it, that you push the wood though. So when a kid was using it, he was just doing everything the right way pushing it thought and everything, but when it hit the guard is slowed down and his hands slipped off and one got caught in it. all i heard was FUCK FUCK FUCK OH MY GOD, so i looked over and i thought he was just joking around with catsup or something but he wasn't. He got his middle, pointer, and ring finger cut about an inch down from the tip. it was really bad. and the janitors had to go though the machine and get all his fingers afterwards so that they could get them sewed back on. Does anyone else have any bad stories from their shop classes?

ohhh shit, nothing to that effect. a nerdy kid in our class shop a piece or 2x10 from a table saw, and after a 10 minute safety demo on how to use it he did it again and it hit somebody

A kid in my class had a seizure while sawing wood, cut off 4 fingers and just kept going


aaaand one kid next to me had his hammers head fly off and hit another kid in the head

LOL. That happend to a kid in my highschool. He lost a finger.

It also happend on Beavis and Butthead. If any of you kids are old enough to remember actual episodes, he got his finger cut off in shop class, tried to pick his nose and his figer got stuck in his nose. Classic.

some kid cut his thumb off at my school, in one of the woodshop classes. they put it in ice and it killed it or something and it couldnt be re-attached...but i heard he got a nice cheque from the school board for that...i would rather have my thumb though

that made me laugh for some reason. but i agree with ya. i only had metal shop in HS. only have one scar on my finger but it isn't a great story.

our school doesnt have shop, but a kid that lives by me and goes to another skoo got his thumb PULLED OFF in shop. sounds so fucking gnar.

well my brother had shop class last year and a kid was fucking around on one of the saws. the wood got stuck in the blade and then the blade shot the 2x4 across the room into someones nuts

Ya that happened to someone in my class in HS on the table saw and had to get like 4 fingers sewed back on.

There was one time though when I had a hilarious kickback.  My friend and I were on the table saw, we were juniors at the time.  I was using one of those push stick things to push a narrow board through the table saw.  Well the table saw caught the push stick and it kicked back and hit me in the hand.  But it hit at an angle and went flying in to the air.  Some kid was walking about 20 feet away and heard the kickback.  He looked up and saw the pushstick flying through the air, he screamed and dove out of the way.  What he didn't realize was that the stick had hit off my hand first, and lost all momentum so it was just sorta lofting through the air to him and landed like 5 feet in front of him.  It was pretty funny and he was pretty embarassed.

this wasn't shop class, but in an architecture class i had, we had to made foam board models of the houses we designed. So we basically were using foam board, rules, and exacto knives.

So i have my long steel ruler on the board and i'm cutting a longgg line. Starts out alright...but about 1/3 of the way through the length of the line the blade decides to hop up onto the ruler and punch a ticket for a direct flight into my fucking thumb that is holding this ruler steady. The moment it hits the steel ruler, it immediately accelerates until it is abruptly stopped by my innocent bystanding thumb. I cut halfway into my thumb with that little bastard blade and started bleeding all over the desk, making a fucking scene, and had to leave school and get it stitched so that the son of a bitch would stay on. The worst part was, I had to return to school after that!!! Honestly, bullshit. Still have a scar.

Like 6 years ago recently after I learned how to weld, I welded in the bed of an old cj-2a and like a dumbass wore a t-shirt during all 4 hours of hit. That was some killer flashburn.

I was polishing my "cube" in the buffer wheel when it slipped out of my hand and shot with tremendous force against the back "safety" guard and ricocheted back and hit the kid standing next to me in the face.  He just looked at me as his face slowly welled up like he just ate a lemon and then he burst into tears.

I felt pretty bad but I laughed because it was one of those things that happens so fasts its funny.  He had a pretty good welt on his forehead all day and people kept asking him about it.

I got an A on my cube.

Not shop class or anything but when i was about 9 or 10 we were at this arts and crafts thing and all sitting on the floor cutting out paper and shit. Randomly i feel this tingling sensation in my hadn so I look down and ,not kidding here, i had the blade of a pair of scizzors sticking halfway into the fleshy bit under my thumb and out the other side. I didn't notice It had gone in or out until I looked down. Had to get it pulled back out and stitched up. Hurt like nothing else.

he was being an idiot and pushing a piece of wood that was too short

instead of using a guide stick to push it through he stuck his fingers too close and the wood was tapered so right when he went to push the tapered end went into the planer and the wood shot through super fast and he fell forward and ground his fingers up

it's easier than it seems to fuck yourself up in a planer...especially if you're a dumbass

Not shop class, but back in 6th or 7th grade someone was fucking with some scissors, and cut his finger half-way off. Was pretty disgusting, but no where near that and other stories.

i had a 4 pound weight spinning on a large vcr motor (i was making a small vehicle that could travel by wire and battery, hard to explain) but basically the weight was spinning really really fucking fast and it snapped off and hit me in the face, the thing snapped in half it hit me so hard (it was metal, disk shaped). it didnt quite knock me out but i was super dazed and was bleeding really badly, it hit me in the chin and went through my lower lip, fucked my tooth up a bit. i had to get my face glued all up it was shitty. i guess im just lucky it didnt hit me in the eye.

In 8th grade a kid wasn't paying attention on the belt sander and sanded off the tips of a couple fingers, blood on the roof and shit it was pretty sick
and one year in high school a kid cut half way through his thumb using the mitre saw...idiots haha

In my shop class some kid was using the table saw to cut a piece of wood and he wasnt using the guards or anti kickback or anything and it kicked back and hit him right in the balls.

it was hilarious but i felt bad for him at the same time

They really aren't that dangerous at all, and your story goes well beyond the standard of what most people call common sense.  You have to put your hand 6 inches into the machine to hit the blade, how stupid can he be?

As for the original post, he definitely wasn't using the machine properly if he did that.  Whether or not he was pushing through properly or not, you should never be in a position that could set you off balance or, for example, send fingers the wrong way if you slip.  I've had a piece slip pretty violently, but my hands were no where near danger (for that exact reason).  Stay in control, no one is timing you.

Sounds like some shitty safety precautions. I use hella saws and shit and always use some sort of guide/push thing if I'm even remotely close to possibly being in any danger, not to mention we got one of them saws that detect moisture and shit and stop, for all intensive purposes, instantly.

There's some dumb kids around for sure, I can't think of any accidents like that.

One guy did manage to cut through a power cable to a sewing machine in sewing class though. Made a huge bang and blew all the fuses so we were plunged into darkness. There was a hole about 1cm diametre in the scisors. I also sewed my tie onto a piece of material I was sewing.. theres a reason guys should stay away from the sewing room!

one of the guy's in the sewing class at my school last year managed to sew through his hand. I'm not even sure how that would be possible.
And another kid sliced through two tendons and a nerve when he was carving a pumpkin. That bled a lot and he had to wear a brace on his hand for a few months afterwards.
... I can't think of incidents that actually happened in shop though.

Ha in first grade i cut my finger tip off with scissors some how, not really sure how but I did. They made a huge deal about it and wouldn't let me use scissors untill 4th grade.

not in shop class but.....

3 years ago my friend chopped his thumb off. we were getting ready to take out the jet skis so everyone is loading all their shit into the truck while my friend is attaching the trailer to the hitch and his finger got caught in between the trailer and the ball. all of a sudden the truck shakes, we hear a loud bang, he yells fuuuuuuuck and the blood from his finger literally shoots over the truck (a 4Runner) and onto the hood. he runs into the house holding his thumb in his hand throws it in the ice bucket while squiritng blood all over the kitchen. it looked like someone got murdered in there. while driving him to the hospital (which is only about a mile away) my friend gets pulled over. they instantly hop out of the truck, the cop gets scared puts his hand on top of his gun as they are yelling to him "we are going to the hospital follow us if you want but were going." he realizes what is happening and just yells GO. HURRY UP GO!!

this all happened in about 9 minutes time. that was a crazy summer. he ended up getting it sewed back on and his new nickname in bongfinger.

yep hands shouldn't be in the position that when they slip you hit the blade, you should be in control so that if there's any form of slip, your hands land somewhere far away from the blades

hahaha yeah for sure! thats so scary, i always use our power tools to build in the garage(table saw, jointer, lathe, etc) my parents always tell me to be careful, never have haha but i still have my fingers (knock on wood) random ass post

in shop this dumb ass, critter, he put a piece of plastic vertically on the circle sander (idk its name) and then it sucked the plastic and his fingers in... had his fingers sanded down until he could get them out which was nasty as fuck

nobody in any of my shop classes ever really hurt themselves, but one time we used the schools $15,000 CNC machine to carve pumpkins, and it just made the biggest fucking mess, and made the coolant  spray turn orange. programming the machine for the curvature of the pumpkin was a bitch.
