I was just wondering if any of you guys have skied it and when you went and what part of the bowl you skied. im going there for part of my spring break so any tips advice would be awesome.

yeah man...i'm going out in the end of april. just try to stay away on the weekends cos it just gets retarded. and make sure you're in shape because it's a hell of a hike.
it has to start somewhere. it has to start sometime. what better place than here, what better time that now.

I will be there in april also. Never skied but my best friend did and he said it was fucking insane. He said 'You best bet is to take aleast 3 days, one in, one skiing, one out.' and also 'fuck that hike, it was long as hell'. Also, be carefull out there, they do have a list that is growing quiet fast...The list as in death toll.

think more towards late april/may. that's what i've heard for skiing it.

i hiked to the bowl about 2 years ago in july, and there was still a couple hundred feet (length, not depth) of snow left that was skiied while i was there. i didn't have my skis with me for that trip, but there was a wicked snowball fight in mid summer.

anyway, that shit is CRAZY. most of the skiiable (that i can imagine, i haven't seen it with snow everywhere) is probably you-fall-you're-fucked terrain. make sure you bring your A-game for that trip.

BTW, a 9 mile hike isn't that bad. although not skiing the same day you hike in is a good idea.

start working out now, cardio and legs, and you'll be all set.

Here is my plan for my four day break from school. Leave pa thursday morning, stay at friends house. Get up earily friday morning and hike that bitch, set up camp and pass the fuck out. Ski that fucker all day sat and build a narly kicker some where, get some good bc shots. Hike down and go home on sunday. Should be fun!! By the way, is there any where to build a decent bc kicker?!?!

it's only a two hour hike into the bowl. we drive up on a friday night. camp out at dolly cop which is like 15 minutes from pinkham notch. hike in in the am. ski all day. hike/ski out. drive back. fun time

where are you guys hiking in from? I know a bunch of people that make day trips up, drive up, hike in, ski, hike out in one day, and they claimed the hike was not more than like 2.5 miles.

And yes, as far as I know (second hand knowledge) there is a good amount of you fall you're fucked terrain, but its not all like that, pick your terrain carefully. Also, I think late April to Early June is best time to ski it. It scares the hell out of me when I hear about people going into tuck's mid winter (which I heard about a few people doing this winter), that is basically asking to die.

yeah i heard the hike is only like 2-3 miles in. make sure you eye it before you try it, or you'll be another statistic.

from pinkham notch it's about 2.5 to 3 miles to the top of the bowl. totally doable as aday trip, but if you add a couple hourse of driving on either end it get kinda long. so camping out the night before is a good way to get an early start without haveing to wake up at 2 am

Why not ski it mid-winter? I am a new-bee when it comes to big mountian/back country. That is why I am going with the experienced crowd. Any tips/help would be greatly appreciated!

i've heard some of the crevasses are starting to show so getting up there this weekend or the next would be your best bet...they got like 6 inches this past weekend but its gonna warm up this week....http://www.mountwashington.org/avalanche/ i bet itll be safe for the weekend though

if you go, be able to ski 45-55 degree terrain in what is basically an 800 vertical foot no-fall zone. And crank your bindings way up, a tweaked knee is better than a death slide down the headwall

Here is a picture from the end of last May. People have built kickers before, I've seen some really sick stuff thrown in the Ravine, but it's not all that common.

Nice thing is -- it gets steeper as you climb higher into the bowl. So if you're not comfortable skiing exposed 45-55 degrees (I'm not, especially in May with legs completely hacked from the climb up) you don't have to. Hike to where you're comfortable, click in and have fun.

The scene is fun, although there can be a lot of idiots around. (Last spring, I got clocked by a kid tubing down the trail well below the cabin.) But like people said, there _are_ deaths there (although generally not on the main lines) so it's not the place to try to start imitating backcountry stuff you've seen in videos. At least the first few times, be cautious and listen to the hardcores.
