Auto Shop Savant question

Alright NS, my dad and i really would like to build a nice Muscle Car before i graduate high school (im a sophomore). My dad has a 327 borred 30 over to make it a 331. He put a lot of money into it and i am wondering what car should we look for that would be cheap. Like Cutlass's, Firbirds, and???

So you are just looking for a body?  How much are you looking to spend and what condition are you hoping to find?

Good luck finding any decent condition muscle cars for cheap. Especially any Firebirds or Camaros. However you can find 68-69;71-73 restorable chevelles for pretty decent prices. The old 70-72 Monte Carlos are also pretty cheap if you can find one. Pontiac GTOs, Tempests, and Lemans can also be found pretty cheap too. (tempest and lemans were base model GTOs and Firebirds). The newer 1975 on Camaros can also be found pretty cheap, but that was when they put in cat converters.

I hope your search goes well. I dreamed of finding an old Mopar or Chevy to work on in highschool with my dad, but he was interested in planes and i have no money to build one. But good luck!! That 327 is a hot little engine. Put a cam and new heads on it? Boring it over will give you minimal gains.

That motor is sort of meh.  Pick up an LS1 out of a junkyard, and toss it into something and make a serious sleeper.  They make ls1 swap kits for basically anything.

The 327 is a little screamer of a motor. Great little small block. They were great back in the day for street  racing.

Find something affordable with no serious rust.

69 camero is my favorite car but those are way to much money i need something cheaper like 72 firebird which is same body style or a cutlass that i can turn into a 442.

Those 1970-81 Firebirds are pretty sweet. You can pick some of those up for pretty cheap. Then turn it into a Burt Reynolds clone!

But check craigslist and ebay, with today's economy people are selling their projects for really cheap (I've seen $1500-4500). Theres also a bunch of people just trying to get rid of cars that have just sat there for several years if you're not afraid of rust. I've found so many project steals in the last year on craigslist that i wanted to kick myself after fixing up my last truck.

I forgot about the Nova's. You can pick those up really cheap since they're a dime a dozen. Sweet car nonetheless.


PLEASE don't put the 327 in anything other than a GM vehicle.

hate to say it, and i skipped over the other comments, but... a 331 is a bit small of a motor for a muscle car, I suppose it would matter what internals you have in it though, but being considered a muscle car, the price goes sky high, so , my comment was a waste

Not really, the 327 was the most powerful small block(stock) GM ever made until they recently came out with the LS1. The 327 is lengendary, so why do you think it is small?

yeah im not sure if you know much about engines because you can make a 327 into a powerful engine like my dad did he spent thousands on this engine back when he was in his twenty's and a ton of muscle cars still have small blocks in them, oh and i dont want to race this car i just want a muscle car that sounds and looks cool which doesnt really matter which engine it has

If you want to go the Mopar route, there are a few cars that are pretty easy to find and that are relatively cheap. I'm just going to go ahead and leave the expensive years and models out.

1970-75 Plymouth Duster- prolly the cheapest and easiest to find out there, obviously earlier years are preferred (ram air hood, 340, go wing, shark tooth grill, etc.)
1968-69/73-75 Plymouth Roadrunner- Easy to find, later model RR were used as police cars.
1970-75 Dodge Dart- pretty much the same car as the Duster, just the Dodge model.
1973-74 Dodge Charger- I really like these and seen alot of these go pretty cheap. I actually passed up a trade on one for my older truck, and i'm still kicking myself for not going through with it.

Those are the main ones, but i'm assuming youd rather want a GM car so you can find a home for the 327.

if it really came down to it i could fit a 327 into pretty much everyone but it would be 1000000 times easier with a GM
