Cab, half cab, fakie vs. switch, ...

Who remembers these arguments back in the day? 

Like when people argued over what was cab and half cab and if these should be even used.  I think cab meant switch take-off, switch landing.  Like you could throw a cab 3, cab 7, cab 10.  Then half cab was switch off, land foward, so that would be like half cab 5, half cab 9.

Then I remember a huge argument on NS was over skiing backwards should be called fakie or switch.  Because people were like, on a snowboard its called switch, but for skis it should be fakie.

Another was zero spin vs. switch zero spin, because a zero spin is already switch, so it was dumb to say switch zero spin.

Just remembering these old trick names and the debates.  If you know any other ones from back in the day, post them up.

Peace_Media, after the Wikipedia link was posted, she corrected herself. Stop trying to be an ignorant cocky fuck.

cab/fakie are skateboarding terms. They involve moving your feet around to different positions on the board. Therefore, they can not be used in skiing -OR- snowboarding. Anyone who uses either of those terms involving skiing or snowboarding is wrong.

it is also impossible to ski, or snowboard fakie (on a centered, twin tip snowboard). It is only really possible to skateboard fakie. I'm not going into details because it's impossible to explain without seeing. A lot of snowboarders call switch frontside spins "cab" spins, which is easier than saying switch frontside, but not completely correct. I'm assuming some skiers call switch tricks cab or fakie, but it's really impossible to do either on skis.

argh, this is gonna be a hard one to explain, but let me clear this one up for you guys...


first things first: When riding sw on a skateboard and popping fakie, spinning frontside isnt the same on a skateboard as on a snowboard.

here is why - when you do a half-cab/caballerial on a skateboard its the same as doing a BACKSIDE 180/360, only you are riding the other way, or switch, while popping your tail (popping fakie).

So what would logically be a fakie frontside spin is in fact called a fakie backside spin when skating.

This is (as i just mentioned) because you do the exact same thing as a ollie backside spin, you pop your tail with your backfoot, you spin "backside" BUT you are riding the other way - so even though what used to be a backside spin when riding normal becomes a frontside spin when popping fakie, we ignore the fact that we did a FRONTSIDE spin when skating and call it BACKSIDE - because physically we move our body like we would for a normal ollie backside spin...

I know it doesnt make much sense, but thats how it is for skateboarding and thats how it has been for at least 30 years.

When riding sw and popping "nollie" (sw ollie) however, this rule doesnt apply. This means that even though you are spinning in the same direction when doing a fakie spin and a sw spin - lets say you do a switch FRONTSIDE 180, when you pop fakie its called fakie BACKSIDE 180 - they are NOT both called frontside even though you spin in the same direction...

This is not the case with snowboarding. It might be because you really cant "pop fakie" on a snowboard or maybe just because it makes more sense - snowboarders do sw frontside spins the same way you do sw ollie frontside spins on a skateboard.

As for skiing I couldnt care less about calling riding backwards switch or fakie but i kinda agree with the fact that no spin should be called cab...

Here is how we name our spins in Norway - its a good system that works so everyone should jump on the bandwagon...

Say you spin left, like most people do:

riding forward - Normal
Unnatural or right-side
riding backwards - Switch
Cab (switch right-side)


I hope people are able to understand this, if not, then i just wasted 20 mins of my life...

i guess u might have just worded it weird but a fakie ollie is riding switch but in nollie too.

cab doesnt have to be frontside, it can be either.

and since it has nothing to do with frontside now you can have cab spins.

I think depending on whether you're in calculus or trig is whether you call spins using radians or degrees.

When snowboarding cab can only be a switch frontside spin...

on a skateboard it can both backside and frontside, but 9 out of 10 people would only call a fakie backside spin a cab. Remember however that fakie backside on a skateboard is spinning the same direction as a swtich frontside on a snowboard...

"Switch" has been misused for over 10 years now.  The correct term for backwards skiing is "fakie".  Read the posts in the above thread.  Also, below is a helpful link:

SWITCH really is a terrible word for skiing backwards, talk about bitein off of other sports.    I like "reverse".....anyone? any new ideas?
