Subs and hearing

personally, i find subs sound like complete shit. so put the volume at 0

I've heard that low frequencies produced by subs aren't actually that bad for your ears. Its the high frequencies that may come from tweeters that will do the damage. I could be wrong so don't hate on me.

unbalanced setups are shit, as are badly built, rattling sub enclosures.  Do it right and It'll sound amazing.

if you want to know what volumes you can create then get a dB meter.

Quick rule of thumb: At 90 decibels you have to shout at a person whose ear is one foot away from you in order to be heard. this is dangerous/damaging sound levels.

Anything above 82 dB requires hearing protection for a 8hr shift.

I cant find  the actual chart for maximum exposure, but the max dB level varies depending on the amount of time one spends in that environment.  Try checking out your local health and safety department to get more detailed info.  A good car audio installer should know too.

I used to have all this memorized, but its slipped my mind.  A quick bit of googling should clear the rest up for you.

this,   i used to have 2 15 inch 2000 watt subs and a 1000 watt 12 inch i would blast them 24 7  my mirrors would shake like jurassic park you could hear it from a mile away my doors would vibrate like a bomb went off inside and my hearing is great.  I get pain in my ears from high frequencies when played loud and i know that has hurt my hearing but i have never gotten any pain from too much bass,,, so its really safe

im pretty sure they can harm your ears...

your gonna get sick of all that bass within a few months anyway. i had two 13" w7's in my first car (i think they were 13? or 12? forgot) and i got so sick of them quick. now i have a 10" alpine type R and its perfect. not alot of bass, but its there when i want it and sounds great with every type of music.

,I had about a 6 cubic foot box in my trunk for 2 12" subs. I sold one sub and one of my amps powering the subs because things were ridiculous loud. I mean, hard to breathe loud, blurry vision, you can't light a lighter in the car the air pressure is so whack, smoke will vibrate in the air, setting off building security systems, car alarms, letting girls orgasm on your trunk......

So it took up the entire fucking trunk, and you could hear me like 3 miles away. You will want to reclaim your trunk space sooner or later, and you will settle on the fact that a single 10" or 12" will suit you fine.

If you care about losing your hearing. From bass its harder than what you might expect....

Hearing loss comes primarily from loud noises higher up in the frequency range. Aka so your banging along listening to nelly or whatever the hell is cool now and its 45hz non stop BOOM BOOM BOOM at say 143dB.....thats not too bad on your ears. Meanwhile if you throw in a component set backed with a nice amp and you have a component set that can get to 126dB loud while playing a bunch of high frequency shit (cymbals, guitars, etc), you will suffer from hearing loss much quicker.

Long story short, bass = ehh yeah it can make you deaf, but a high end component set and nice amp will make you deaf MUCH much faster.

^exactly what he said. your going to miss your trunk alot. and depending on what kind of car you have, its gonna add an extra 2-300lbs almost and gonna slow your whip down alot.

thats exactly what i have. i love it - its not too much, it just provides very nice lows

people dont need 2 12s... i have 1 10 and its perfect

My subs weighed 65lbs a piece, and yeah took up the entire trunk. It was a show car pretty much though, but it made the car not even functional besides just showing off.

Oh yeah it took a 3.8L Impala from like 30 or 31mpg stock mpg to like 22mpg....thats what stereo + rims did to it.

I also had a second battery in the trunk though for the stereo.

Everyone needs a big stereo, then everyone needs to see just how big of a stereo they actually need :)
