Dying jackets..

so ive seen boots, and crowbars dyed but what about jackets? im lookin at a burton traction jacket xxl but they only have white so would it be possible to dye it to anything i wanted? anyone have any experience with this??\
sorry if its a repost i searchd and found nothing.

well fabric dye probably would work if you use it realy concentrated but i wouldnt know,, if its a thicker fabric im thinkin it would be a bit tougher than if it was a thin kind.

Well i wouldnt recomend it because the fabric is made to be moisture resistant. Pluss dyeing would come out with more dye in one area such as the seems where the dye can soak in better. My formal recomendation is pitch the idea to a rich friend with a bunch of old jackets. see how successful he is and go from there.

hhaha yeah well im pitching the idea to NS in hopes someone might have tried it but i get what your saying about the seems though and as loong as the rest of the coat was smooth in color then that could look way cool. just curios cuz im pretty sure boots are 100% water proof where jackets are not haha

i would venture to guess that a dye for boots and a dye for cloth wouldnt be the same dye

Well RIT Dye is actually made for fabric dying, so in theory it should work. But the outside shell of most jackets is moister wicking so the dye wouldn't be absorbed and I feel it would just make a really big mess.

Well, if you wash the jacket, the moisture wicking goes away for the most part, and the shell will begin to absorb water. If you die the jacket though. It will die EVERYTHING. So if you do it correctly, it will look very legit. It will take a very large container to dye it in though. So, you'll have to find a way to work that out. And you'll probably have to do it outside, otherwise it will drip everywhere in your house, and just be a mess fit for a king.

yeah ^^ thats what i figured just keepin it up top to see if anyone has done it... i want it to be water proof though so i figure i could wash it like twice then dye then use that swix stuff you supossed to throw in the wash to like renew the material haha... imma getthe jacket but probably wont dye it untill it get mad dirty.. i love the white but its gunna stain hella bad so i figure once it goes to hell ill wash it a few times and throw it in a plascit box lined with garbage bags haha (i live in a dorm haha)

why are there like two different shades of purple? was the jacket like white and light grey?

Here's my white special blend jacket. The material was thick and didn't take the dye too well. At first I kind of hated it cause it's almost like periwinkle/pink, but I like it now. It was supposed to be purple.

i did a pair of old oakley pants that were white and really dirty so I wanted to dye them.   I wanted to make them brown but they turned out purple/brown.  I used a lot of dye and let them soak in a bath tub for 12 hours or so.  Just be patient when you're doing it

Really hot water, and soak as long as possible. Don't use normal clothing dye, as it normally is only supposed to be used on cotton, try using a RIT/plastic dye, and just make it over-concentrated. I haven't dyed jackets but I've had some experience and research into dying shirts, skates, and other things.

wash the jacket a bunch of times before using it

does anyone know how this effects the waterproofing?

It's actually XL and I'm 6'2". The fur is removable and the jacket is used around town.
